Polaris was the first company to develop a snowmobile that was proven capable of driving on snow. Edgar Heteen was a staunch supporter of snowmobiles in his early years. In 1960, he made a 1,200-mile trip through the Alaskan wilderness to prove the reliability of the Polaris® Sno Traveler model. Other snowmobile models followed, further developed. In the 1990s, Polaris developed a snowmobile designed for use in the mountains.
Throughout much of the 1950s and 60s, Polaris continued to design and produce model snowmobiles, and the company built vehicles that competed and won several snow racing competitions. In 1965, the company invented the Mustang snowmobile, billed as the "family model" of snowmobile products.

Looking back at the company's history, it all goes back to David Johnson, Allan and Edgar Hetteen building the world's first snowmobile that cost no less than $465. The newly formed company continued to manufacture snowmobiles, many of which were then sold to other companies around the world. In 1960, Edgar Heteen decided to leave the company to start his own company to compete with Polaris. Edgar named his company Polar Manufacturing, a name that was changed to Arctic Enterprises and Arctic Cat a few years later.

A snowmobile is a motor vehicle designed to travel on snow. It is steered by skis in the front and driven by a chain belt in the rear. Quebec mechanic Joseph-Armand Bombardier built the first snowmobile in 1935. Today, there are more than 600,000 registered snowmobiles in Canada. They are used for transport, recreation, hunting and trapping, especially in rural areas and the north.
Snowmobiles have been a part of the Canadian landscape since New Year's Eve 1922, when 15-year-old Joseph-Armand Bombardier took his first "Oversnow" car for a test drive on the streets of Valcourt, Quebec. Little did he know that his creation would produce one of Canada's most popular and beloved winter sports. But would Mr. Bombardier turn in his grave if he saw the machines we ride in today?
