video British Airways "I feel happy because my children can learn" | Africa Food Crisis Advert 2023 • Resilient people farming and planning for the future

The Red Cross has been providing support and helping famers like Kizaro to develop his farming techniques. Thanks to that, he has been successful in ensuring his children get access to education. Kizaro is a farmer in Taita Taveta. He has 11 children, all of whom attend school apart from his nine-year-old son Khafidhi who has autism.

As well as providing seed, fertiliser, pesticides and fungicides, the team organise field exchange visits, and train farmers on post-harvest management.

The Kenya Red Cross have also linked Kizaro to a cooperative, which means he has maize he can eat and maize he can sell. The maize he sells is at a set price and he doesn’t have to deal with a broker.

Kizaro knows he is fortunate to have a farm adjacent to a man-made canal fed by meltwater from Mount Kilimanjaro. Many of his neighbours are not so lucky and rely on sporadic rainfall.

Kizaro simply hopes that all his children complete their education, because he was not awarded the same opportunity as a child.

With the help of new supporters and the ongoing support of funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, we can continue to provide immediate aid and climate-smart livelihood support. Communities we serve are already reporting better access to food and easier ways to make a living, with which they can support themselves and their families.

To help with long-term sustainable solutions, we’re also supporting people to build resilience, with tools and skills to help people to adapt to extreme weather and the effects of climate change. That includes trainings on the use of forecasts and weather warning systems, restoring degraded land, sharing seeds that can grow better in times of drought, building stronger water irrigation systems, developing urban gardens, and using the latest climate-smart technology to predict the best time to plant and harvest crops.

There are solutions to this food crisis. Your donations can help now, and with sustainable local-led action in the longer term. Some of the world’s most resilient and resourceful people are being pushed to the very edge, losing their loved ones and livelihoods - the last thing we should do is give up on them. - British Airways advertsiment spot 2023
