American, Black, not Catholic. 0:15 Pick one. 0:16 She's a Black woman, he's an Italian man. 0:18 Their cultural differences, 0:20 the family not necessarily wanting you 0:22 to marry outside of your tribe, on both sides. 0:24 You can love many people in this life, 0:26 but the trick is 0:27 to find someone who you can love and live with in peace. 0:31 I don't think you're gonna find that halfway around the world 0:34 with men who are nothing like you. 0:36 There's a specificity and an honesty 0:38 to what we wanted to tell about Sicilian culture. 0:41 Sicily is not like the rest of Italy. 0:43 And Southern Italy is a world away from here. 0:46 -They're often seen as outsiders. -I know something about that. 0:50 And an honesty and specificity 0:52 about what it is to be a Black Texan. 0:54 Well, like we say in Texas, go big or go home. 0:58 We were aware that there's an opportunity 1:00 to sort of have a Black woman's coming-of-age story. 1:04 I came here to experience art. 1:07 We don't often get to see any women of color 1:10 who are having an adventure that's not steeped in struggle. 1:13 She's having an adventure 1:15 that's not rooted in racial obstruction 1:18 or anything but an internal drive. 1:21 I've never seen this particular mix of folks together. 1:26 I knew what it was like to marry somebody 1:28 from another country and to be married to a chef. 1:30 Like, there's so many little things that I knew, 1:33 what it was like to be a Black woman alone abroad, 1:35 living abroad for a long time. 1:37 I think a lot of women will see themselves in that story, 1:40 including women of color. 1:42 One of the most beautiful love stories of all time. 1:47 The thing that I would like women and Black women in particular 1:50 to get out of this is that spirit of adventure. 1:52 Sometimes, when things don't feel 1:54 like they're working out where you are, 1:56 don't be afraid to try something new, go someplace new, 1:58 to listen to what your heart, 2:01 what your gut is really telling you might be something for you. 2:04 All of us will have our "from scratch" moments, 2:06 where we are looking at our lives 2:09 and something doesn't look the way we imagined it to look, 2:12 and we begin from where we are, putting one foot in front of another. 2:15 With our hearts open, we go forward. 2:18 In a city where there is no center, 2:21 I'm your center. - advertisement spot 2022
