Is it feasible to access emails stored in Microsoft Exchange Server?
To aid with data recovery rapidly and minimize downtime, Exchange Server provides tools like the eseutil software and the recovery database. We will examine their utility in retrieving email content in the section that follows.
How to recover Email Data in Microsoft Exchange Server
One of the built-in features of Windows Server is the ability to back up server data, including Exchange Server. This feature needs to be set up and activated before an Exchange failure may happen. This solution will walk you through every step of retrieving lost email data from a Windows Server backup.
When asked to launch PowerShell with administrative privileges, press Yes after pressing the A key and clicking Win + X. Once you're ready, enable Windows Server backup by running the command below.

On the other hand, you may find the Server Manager and choose Manage there. Navigate to the Add Roles and Features wizard by clicking on the corresponding button. After that, choose Windows Server Backup from the Features menu. After it is enabled, launch the Server Manager by clicking the Tools menu.
- Next, locate Local Backup on the left side of the screen, right-click on it, and then choose Backup Schedule. After that, choose Custom > Next after clicking the Next button. Finding the disks that hold the Exchange database (.edb files) and log files is the next step. Pick out whole directories or files instead.
- To access the advanced settings, go to the next menu and select the one that best suits your needs. Select the disk where the backup will be stored, the frequency with which it should run, and, when prompted, click the Yes button to proceed with the deletion of existing data.

- To recover data from a Windows Server backup, open the backup program, go to the left pane, and right-click on Local Backup.

- If Applications is greyed out on the Select Recovery Type panel, then backups of files or folders rather than volumes were performed. To proceed, go to File > Folders, then recover the.edb and log files to a place of your choosing.
- To define the recovery destination, go to the Application drop-down menu, choose Exchange, and then click Next. To keep things simple, we'll go with Recover to Original Location.
- Launch the procedure after you've double-checked the recovery settings. If you're using PowerShell or the Exchange Admin Centre, mount the database after it finishes by following these steps:
To mount the database, use "DB01" (where DBO1 is the name of the database).
Run this command to check the database status:
Name, *FullBackup, Get-MailboxDatabase-Server-Status
Disk corruption or logical problems might be the cause of any mounting errors. To fix the database, run the eseutil command.
Chapter 2: The Command Prompt
Exchange database recovery is another option available to users through Command Prompt. Gathering the required database and log files, checking their integrity, and running recovery procedures with the help of the eseutil tool are all part of this process. The same can be done here:
To get the Exchange database ready, move the.edb file and any logs to a special location. For quick access during recovery, put data restored using Windows Server Backup in this custom location.
Following this, run the following command in the eseutil tool to check if the data is in a Clean Shutdown or Dirty Shutdown.
- Run the following command: eseutil.exe /MH D:DBRecoveryDB01DB01.edb.
- We will verify the transaction log's integrity if the database is in Dirty shutdown:
- the executable file eseutil.exe /ml E00
- The logs are considered healthy and ready for recovery if the status shows OK.
- The following command will launch the eseutil utility, which will be used to restore the database:
- Eseutil executed at E00 with the following parameters: D:DBrecoveryDB01 and dots. At the directory D:DBrecoveryDB01,
- After that, to make sure the database is back to normal after the recovery, execute the following command:
- Run the following command: eseutil.exe /MH D:DBRecoveryDB01DB01.edb.
- Users also have the option of using the following command to confirm it:
- E00 /l eseutil The file path is D:DBrecoveryDB01. At the directory D:DBrecoveryDB01,
- Mounting the database or retrieving mailbox data is possible after entering the Clean Shutdown state.

- Follow these steps to transfer a mailbox from the recovery database to the one you want to use:
- - SourceStoreMailbox 8aa77cb3-dc38-1f37-72e5-55702e737f52 - TargetMailbox DB01 - New-MailboxRestoreRequest -SourceDatabase RDB01
- (If the following error message appears when running the script: Source Mailbox legaceuxchangedn doesn't match—a legacy Exchange DN mismatch—put the following command at the end: -AllowLegacyDNMismatch.)
- We still need to remove the completed request so that the recovery environment is not cluttered, so execute the following command:
- This command retrieves the status of the finished Get-MailboxRestoreRequest and then deletes it.
In order to complete the recovery procedure, dismount the recovery database. This will close access to the database:
Get rid of the RDB01 database.
Finally, before granting the user access, log in to the recovered mailbox using Outlook or Outlook Web Access to confirm that the mailbox is operational and all necessary data has been saved.
