How to Stop Meta from using your data for AI training

Even former Facebook subsidiary Meta is joining the other internet giants in releasing their own AI models. Considering Meta's track record with privacy, many consumers may be wary of allowing Meta to use their personal data to help train AI. Given that, you could be wondering what you can do to stop Facebook or Meta from mining your data to feed artificial intelligence. Thankfully, you don't have to if you don't want to with Meta.

There are several ways you can turn off the usage of your data in Meta's AI training on Meta and Facebook. Here they are:

How to exercise the Meta option

Options available might be different depending on your country.

1.Facebook Support Page

The easiest way is through the support center of Facebook. During the period when this article was being written, the option to delete your data was available only within Europe. I do hope that in the following days, this shall be released to other areas.

You are still free to express your views and may answer some certain requests for information that could give away personally identifiable information.

Go to the Meta page, where the section entitled Data Subject Rights for Third Party Information Used for AI is located.

You will see three options here; the second option removes any trace of your personal information from third parties used for developing and improving Meta's AI, so that is the best one.

Click the third option, then hit Send.

You can also choose the third option, if you do not want to disclose that information, it will instead ask you for some personal information, from which it will draft a letter with your data in it and asking for its deletion.

Meta will consider your application and will get back to you as soon as possible, in order to keep you updated about the status.

Make sure that LinkedIn does not use your data in order to train its AI.

2. Turn Meta's Activity Off

Otherwise, you can turn Meta technologies off from your device. This has nothing to do with Meta AI. However, this will help you delete those websites that have shared your data with Meta. That data can be used to train Meta's artificial intelligence model.

On the Off the Meta Technologies page, click on Your activity.

There you can find three options: Manage future activities, Clear prior activities, and Disconnect specific activities.

Clicking on the first option will check the box for applications and websites which have shared your data with Meta in the past. When you click Clear from the prior activity, it clears all current data.

Finally, you can disconnect the future activities under the section Manage future activity. This would mean that henceforth, personally identifiable information will not be shared by your linked sites with Meta.

Those would be two general points on how personal information is collected: first, by Meta AI, and second, by the company itself. You could also go further in managing how much personal information you post on Meta by checking the privacy settings on either Facebook or Instagram.
