The commercial features renee, a swiffer representative, who is talking about how she can save money on her cleaning using the swiffer coupon
Some greener options have emerged, such as Bona Mop or Easy Greener Mop Pads. But aside from a few outspoken detractors like Julie Kerr, Swiffer still dominates the cleaning market to the point that it's become a household word.
Then a green box fills the screen, and a smiling woman and her daughter unwrap a novelty cleaning kit. "This box is a blast: the brand new Swiffer Sweeper. It's easy to put together," says the narrator. The ad turned into a dance-like montage of cleanliness, set to an equally catchy song about the new tool. The rest is truly history.
The commercial ends with renee saying "$10 off your first order when you use code renee"

"A similar product has been marketed in Japan by a company called KAO," reported a November 1999 article in the Cincinnati Business Courier. Later in the article, a spokesman for rival S.C. Johnson said, "KAO has been selling this product in Japan for five years."
Renee is trying to convince people to buy swiffer products in order to save money
The Swiffer may not yet be a vestige of the predatory consumerism of a bygone era that valued instant gratification above all else; but still: the biggest hurdle most people have to deal with a Swiffer is the environment. Many of its models rely on disposable pads that are thrown away after a quick clean. "Procter & Gamble profiting at the expense of our forests," read the subject line on a recent Friends of the Earth listing service.
Laura King, then Procter & Gamble's Swiffer brand manager, countered: "We thought we could do it ourselves...we tend to think we can do it better." At press time, S.C. Johnson had just launched his Your own copy of the product, Pledge Grab-It.
