VirtualBox is a powerful, feature-rich, and easy-to-use open source virtualization platform owned by Oracle for running multiple operating systems on a single physical machine. Here is how to install Debian on VirtualBox.
Install Debian on VirtualBox on Windows 11
If you want to install the Debian Linux distribution on VirtualBox on Windows 11/10, follow the steps mentioned below to do so.
- Meet all the prerequisites
- Create the virtual machine
- Prepare your machine for Debian
- Install Debian
Now, let us discuss them in detail.
1] Meet all the prerequisites
The first thing we need to do in this case is to install the Oracle VirtualBox utility. If you already have it, you can skip this step, but if not, follow the steps mentioned below to install VirtualBox.
- Open a browser and go to virtualbox.org.
- In the VirtualBox Downloads from Platform section, click on the platform where you want to install the utility.
- Your browser will start downloading the installation media right away. Run it by double-clicking on the downloaded installation media and follow the on-screen instructions until complete. You can now move on to the next step, with VirtualBox installed.
Debian is a free Linux distribution. So, we can go to debian.org and click on the hyperlink to start downloading it. Once you have clicked on the link, the Debian ISO file will start downloading within your browser.
In addition to this, you will need 20GB of free space on your hard drive and at least 4GB of free RAM during runtime when you are running music.

2] Creating a Virtual Machine
Next, we are going to create a virtual machine on which we are going to install Debian. You don't need to follow our settings to the letter as it is based solely on our system resources - you can change it based on your organization's policy or your system's process.
To create a virtual machine, follow the steps mentioned below.
- Open Oracle VirtualBox.
- Click the New button, which will open the Create Virtual Machine wizard.
- In the Name box, type "Debian."
- Click the drop-down menu next to the ISO image and click Other.
- Navigate to wherever you have stored the downloaded ISO image - most likely it is in your Downloads folder.
- Click Next.
- It will now ask you to choose what type of credentials you would like to use. Fill in the field to your liking and click Next.
- Next, you will use the slider to set the base memory and the number of processors used. We recommend setting it to at least 4GB of memory.
- Click Next.
- Click Create a virtual hard disk now, put something in the memory, and click Next.
Summary - Review the Summary and click Finish.
This creates a virtual machine and then boots it. However, you need to make some additional changes, so shut down the machine and proceed to the next step.

3] Prepare your machine for Debian
As we mentioned earlier, we cannot install Debian directly; before that, we need to do some configurations. Follow the steps mentioned below to do the same.
- Right-click on the newly created virtual machine and select Settings.
- Once in the General tab, click on Advanced and under Shared Clipboard and Drag and Drop, set the options to Bidirectional.
- Go to the System tab and using the arrow keys change the order of Boot Order so that CD/DVD Drive is selected first and immediately followed by Hard Disk Drive. Deselect all the other options for Boot. Finish.
Finally, save the changes we made.

- Start the virtual machine for Debian.
- Use the keyboard and continue with the installation process, which will take quite a while.
- It will then ask you to log in using the credentials we created earlier to log in to your operating system. You will then select a language, date and time, region, and set up an account.
