- Make sure the Hosts file is not read-only
- Create a new Hosts file
- Repair Visual Studio C++ Redistributable
Let us take a closer look at them, one by one.
1] Run the installer as an administrator
Let us first run the installer with administrative privileges. You can right click on the installer and choose Run as administrator. A UAC prompt will appear, click on Yes to begin the installation and if it is a lack of privileges issue, this will get the job done for you.
2] Download the latest version of .NET Framework
Windows .Net Framework provides an environment where programs that have been written in .Net run. A utility that usually comes pre-installed on your computer, however, due to some kind of technical glitch or because it is outdated, it is unable to do its job. So, let us install the latest version of .Net Framework on your computer.
For this, open dotnet.microsoft.com. Click on the hyperlink corresponding to the latest version of .NET Framework and click on Download .NET Framework 4.8.1 Runtime, which is the latest version till date. This will start downloading the executable file. Once downloaded, run it. The installation process will begin.
In this case, if you get the message ".NET Framework 4.8.1 or a later update is already installed on this computer", we recommend that you disable the feature and then enable it again. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Open Control Panel by searching for it in the Start Menu.
- Change the View by option to Large icons.
- Click Programs and Features >> Turn Windows features on or off.
- Find .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Series, uncheck the checklist, and click OK.
- This will remove the feature; once done, check both options one at a time and install them.
3] The host file is not set to read-only.
When you install VMware Horizon client, you need to edit the hosts file; as the file is read-only, you cannot make any changes to it. To fix this issue, we need to make sure that the file is not read-only. Follow the steps mentioned below to do so.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.
- Find the hosts file and right-click on it; select Properties.
- If you are on the General tab, uncheck the Read-only box if it is checked and then click Apply > OK.
Once you have done that, check if the issue is fixed. If you only see hosts.ics, right-click on it, click Rename, remove the .ics extension and check if it is set to Read-only. Make the necessary changes. Note: To do this, administrator privileges are required, so if you are an administrator and you get a UAC prompt, simply click Yes and then remove the extension.
4] Create a new Hosts file
If the Read-only box was not already checked and you are facing this issue, we suggest you reset the Hosts file.
For this, go to File Explorer, press Win + E and navigate to the following location.
%systemroot% system32driversetc
Rename the hosts file to hosts.bak. You may need to take ownership of the file first.
After that, you need to create a new default Hosts file.
5] Reinstall Visual Studio C++ Redistributable
When you launch VMware Horizon Client, you must have noticed that it is looking for Visual Studio C++ Redistributable. The item may be corrupted, in which case the installation fails. For this to work, we need to repair Visual Studio C++ Redistributable. Last but not least, check if the issue is fixed.
