Your movement is one of the most major determining factors between life and death as you make your way through the Lands Between full of adversaries and bosses in Elden Ring. Though it sounds like the most basic concept, learning to sprint is actually quite a fundamental mechanic early within Elden Ring.

The idea is to get familiar with the sprinting motion and its consequences, and how your character's movement varies. Also, sprinting isn't always the best move-especially if you have a boss or enemy hot on your heels. The basics of sprinting and what it brings along in Elden Ring are explained below.

How does sprinting work in Elden Ring?

The button that you use for your dodge roll and backstep in Elden Ring is also the default for sprinting. Rather than press the button, if you're currently using these buttons a lot, just keep moving forward. Your character will start to sprint after a little length of time. While they are in combat, their stamina meter will deplete. This differs from how previous Dark Souls games handled sprinting, which would drain after they're out of combat.

The biggest mistake PC players make when trying to sprint is dodging instead. The trick to successfully running easier is to walk for at least two seconds before hitting the dodge button. Tapping this button in combat will allow you to dodge an enemy's attack - or even to avoid falling off of a cliff - but holding this button will allow you to run away should you feel the need.

Best Elden Ring sprint setup

If you're playing Elden Ring with a mouse and keyboard, then you can always enable movement control when you want to. It's just at the very top of the key bindings page on PC. By default, this means your character will explore at a considerably slower pace, changing this by clicking here. Just like when you're running, you have to continually press this key to sustain this sluggish pace. This might be useful when you're trying some especially hard move or jump at a certain position.

If you are trying to find a better key to use when you're on a laptop, the Tab key is a good option. The Shift key is also a really good choice, one that you shouldn't be using on any other keys; however, you'll find some problems when you're on Strong Attack or some skills, which require you to click the shift and mouse buttons at the same time. You could do a lot better than use the spacebar if you can manage to keep those separate in your head.

It becomes a lot more challenging with controller players. By default, the B button of the Xbox controller and the Circle button on the PlayStation controller are chosen. Utilizing the restricted number of controls controllers provide; it can be difficult to find a better alternative. Note that the X and Square buttons, which represent the Use Item options, can be used in their stead, but you'll have to keep track of them. The small space makes it difficult to tell what's going to work best, and tapping it toggles it into an entirely different option altogether.

Never run from a threat. In the course of engaging in combat, stamina is burned through sprinting-so you want to time your sprints well so you don't deplete that meter. Of course, you don't want to simply sprint your way out of literally everything-you have so many other deeper mechanics available to you. You'll want to be able to outmanoeuvre your enemies while still having enough stamina to wield a sword or evade their attacks. While sprinting, remember that it uses some of your stamina meter, and feel free to change any key bindings if you prefer them otherwise.
