Step Two: Using VLOOKUP
If you want to pull in related information from another sheet depending on a search in one column, VLOOKUP.
Now assume that we need to retrieve the 'Gender' of the employee records that are located in Sheet 1 by using a set of codes in Sheet 2 as indicated in the figure below:
Write the following formula in cell B2 of Sheet 2 to obtain the gender information:

Assuming the above equation, the following can be described:
We are looking for the Employee Code and it is identified by B2.
The range of data in Sheet 1 is Sheet1!B$2:C$11.
2 returns the column Gender - column C in the range, which gives us the column we want to return in the range.
False: We want an exact match.
Next select cell B2 and drag the fill handle down to fill all the formulas for all the Employee Codes in sheet A.
Here, the data shall be dynamically pulled using Employee Codes that are in Sheet 2. When you edit something at Sheet 1 and then refer to the Employee Codes in Sheet 2, then the data in Sheet 2 will be updated in the very instant.
3. INDEX and MATCH operations.
INDEX and MATCH are quite useful either when your dataset is continuously expanding or you need to do lookups in multiple column ordering. In the Sheet 2 cell B2, write the formula for fetching gender from Sheet 1 by employee code as shown below.
From the above formula,
INDEX(Sheet1!C$2:C$11, …
This returns a value in column C of Sheet 1 containing the gender.
MATCH searches in cell A2 for the range of Employee Codes in Sheet 1.
You are looking for an exact match, as represented by zero (0).
The INDEX function returns the corresponding Gender using the relative row number returned by the MATCH function, where the matching Employee Code is used.
Now, to copy the formula for all the Employee Codes listed in column A, you can select cell B2 and drag the fill handle down.
