How to defeat Curtis, the Prince of Laughter in Enotria The Last Song

Enotria: The Last Song immediately sets the tone with its first boss, the Price of Laughter: this is Soulslike, and it is not going to go easy on you. Coming off the back of Dark Souls and Lies of P, I felt like I almost needed to ask if I was good enough to take on Enotria, or if the Chapel of Maja would forever be my scapegoat.

Best Loadout to Defeat Curtis in Enotria: The Last Song

For beating Curtis, the Price of Laughter, we recommend Stage Longsword or Stage Greatsword. The Colossal Greatswords are powerful but have long swing animations, which will leave you open for an attack. Also, the Polearms, though offering range, are similarly unwieldy against Curtis' wide-sweeping polearm attack. A close- to mid-range weapon with fast attack speed is ideal.

If you haven't done so, improve the fight's pace by making a better weapon on the anvil in Lower Commons. For this we recommend Golden Dart, Hungover Strike, Coastal Harpoon, and Drunken Sword Lines since they have pretty short animation times for attacks and their respective attacks can hit in close and long range which will make fighting Curtis a bit easier.

Curtis, the Price of Laughter - movements and combos

As with most Soulslike games, Enotria: The Last Song has its bosses divided into phases. Curtis's second phase is engaged when his health is dropped down to half. During the first phase, Curtis uses his trusty Polearm to unleash different combos on the player. Stay away from him to reset his combo chain to make him single attack and bait him to his single attacks. Here are the various moves that Curtis performs :

Dash and Swing Curtis sprints up to you and swings his Polearm over his head. Dash into him, toward his legs, as he's halfway through his swing or poise right before his weapon sweeps low. Low to High Swing Curtis swings his Polearm in an upward, anti clockwise arc. Parry or dodge back.

Two Swing and Jab Combo Curtis does a two-swing combo into a jab. Stay close and dodge left, right, then left or right to avoid them all. Use parry on each if preferred.

Heavy Attack Swing A slow wide-swinging attack. Parry or dodge.

Four Swing Combo A three-swing combo with a last swing that adjusts positions. Dodge left, right, left, then left, or parry each.

Fake Out Attack: Curtis feints a swing, then follows up with a belated attack. Pay close attention to his arms and wait until the last moment to dodge.

General Tips:

Don't Button Mash: Controls in Enotria are sensitive, so try not to make very fast button presses. You may end up animation-locking. Play slow and patient.

Make Use of the Arena: Employ the stairs effectively to get out of combos, but don't find yourself huddled in too tight corners as you might get disoriented.

Healing Cancellation: Unlike Lies of P, you can safely cancel healing by quickly pressing another button without animation locking.

In his second phase, Curtis retains the same moveset he had in his first phase while adding two new attacks:

Shield Pushbacks Curtis charges forward with a shield and attempts to swipe you with two shield bashes. Depending on if you use a Line to destroy the shield, he can link this into a Polearm strike as well. If he is near his Awakened state, dash into him while he's charging toward you with the shield and immediately critical afterward.

Don't Rely on Backwards Dodging: Curtis's infinite combos will kill you once you're caught in one, and it's tough to Wake him up.

Don't Jump: You'll be open and vulnerable to way too much damage you really can't afford to take.
