Mantis Ant is resistant to Earth but weak to Strike and Wind, so the latter two are much more effective against it. Well, give any character the Sylphid Boomerang, though Careena's the best due to her Dancer class. Rune Knight Val is also a good option. For whatever class she has, make sure Careena learns Cyclone and Defenseless from her Elemental Plot.
Mantis Ant relies on very simple slashes and spinning wheel attacks that can be easily dodged if timed correctly. Whenever it jumps or spits poisonous air, it's best to stay your distance. The most threatening attack of the mantis is its charging crystals, which track you.
When it charges crystals, attack its belly with Wind attacks to cancel the move and deal more damage. When prepared, cast your Wind Class Strike for powerful, pointy bursts. Healing items like Candies and Cups of Wishes should be on hand in case of an emergency; generally speaking, though, Mantis Ant's attacks are sluggish and telegraphed, so with a good strategy, you won't have too many issues.
How to Beat Mantis Ant
Following are some ways to beat the first major boss of the game, the Mantis Ant:
Exploit Wind Classes: Utilize either Dancer or Rune Knight in order to make Wind-attribute attacks.
Stay Behind: At all times, stay behind Mantis Ant in order to avoid most of its attacks. Attack its weak point-the Belly.
Attack the Belly: Above all, hit its Belly, especially when it charges up for its crystal attack.
Respect Its Attacks: Relatively slower compared to other bosses later on, but can still be deadly; avoid poison for heavier damage.
By doing so, you will have finally defeated Mantis Ant and installed Careena as the Alm of Wind-a great ally that you can add to your party on your way to the Mana Tree.
