Of course, theoretically, one can go further with Star Wars Outlaws without it, but the slicing kit contains several useful tools and ways to get through the Imperial security lockers.

How to get a slicing kit in Star Wars Outlaws
Kay's slicing kit comes from Aila Bren, the legendary Outlaws expert. The intelligence chain opens when New Tricks is completed. Danka will have suggestions on two possible experts, of which Aila is one.
Head to Mirogana's gambling den and eavesdrop on a conversation by the back bar on the left-hand side if you're facing the entrance. It will provide you with a clue regarding Aila's location.
Aila is in Crimson Dawn territory. If you're not on good terms with Crimson Dawn, you may want to undertake some contract work to improve your relations. Otherwise, you can slip inside through an entrance to the northwest of Mirogana's marketplace, near a restaurant.
Inside, head for the landing pad. This is a restricted area, so you will probably have to climb over some rails to get inside without being detected. Speak with the man on the landing pad to activate Aila's quest.
Star Wars Outlaws: Aila's quest
Aila's quest is a pretty good introduction to slicing and getting into places you are not supposed to. Follow the quest marker to a small Imperial outpost and pick up the sequencer.
Next head to the larger Imperial Forward Base. To infiltrate, you'll want to find a position where you can jump over one of the overlooking walls of the compound. You'll want to be in stealth mode inside these bases, essentially. Take people down with takedowns, use your stun gun, or ask Nix for help.
The quest marker will bring you over to Aila. You'll need to pick two locks, however. If you're having any issues with that, check out our lockpicking guide.
With Aila in hand, leave the room by way of the vent. Slash the terminal to activate the compound's defense turrets then make good your own escape by whatever means you like. Whether or not you are detected is irrelevant, you only need to escape. If you'd like, you can utilize your new slicing kit to remove Kay's wanted status.
