At the end of season two, the two had a physical altercation after Rue unveiled Cassie had been seeing Maddie's former beau Nate (Jacob Elordi). Maddie has consistently demonstrated that she values loyalty more than anything and is of the "with-me-or-against-me" mindset, thus this betrayal by Cassie may be the conclusion of their relationship for good. In addition, Maddie's last line “Don’t worry. This is just the beginning” in reference to Nate and how he just split up with Cassie, could signify Maddie perceiving Nate's toxic tendencies, as he has exhibited abuse and control. She comprehends this is the commencement of a damaging liaison between her former closest friend and her ex-boyfriend, and she is ready to sever ties with both.
Overall, it looks like Cassie and Maddie's relationship is over for good. Maddie values loyalty and understands that Nate is not someone who can be trusted. She is ready to move on and start anew, and it is uncertain if Cassie will be part of her new journey. Whatever the future holds for these two, it is sure to provide an emotional rollercoaster for the audience.
