If you've updated Chrome to the latest version, you may have noticed some short notifications appearing at the top, partially overlaying your browser's toolbar. These are called Toast notifications (or desktop notifications). They remain visible for only a few seconds and then automatically disappear.

How to disable Toast notifications in Google Chrome

What are Toast notifications?

Recently introduced as part of the latest Google Chrome update (Chrome 130), Toast notifications provide visual confirmation of user actions, such as copying links or images. In some cases, these notifications also offer a quick link for follow-up actions. For example, when you add something to Chrome's reading list, a Toast notification appears to confirm that the item was successfully added. The notification also includes an action button to quickly open the reading list side panel.

Disable Toast notifications in Google Chrome

Toast notifications have been added to improve the overall user experience. However, if you are not happy with these additional pop-ups in your browser, you can choose to disable them. To disable Toast notifications in the Google Chrome browser, follow these steps:

Open Google Chrome and type "chrome://flags/" in the browser tab's URL bar. Press Enter. You will be taken to the "Experiments" page, which lists all the experimental features available in Chrome.

Type "toasts" in the search bar at the top. "Top Chrome Toasts" will appear in the search results. Click the drop-down menu next to "Top Chrome Toasts" and select "Disabled" from the list of options.

You will no longer see Toast notifications in your Chrome desktop app.

Note: Since "Desktop Toast" is still an experimental feature, Google has not included an option to disable Toast notifications in Chrome settings, and for now, this is only possible using Chrome flags as described above. Additionally, Google could also change, disable, or completely remove the feature in future updates at any time without notifying users.

Enabling Toast Notifications in Google Chrome

If you don't see Toast notifications in Chrome but would like to have them, try updating your browser to the latest version or check back after future updates (since Google is rolling out the feature gradually, it may take a while for it to appear in your Chrome browser).

If you have disabled Chrome Toast notifications and want to re-enable them, follow these steps:

Go to your Chrome browser and type 'chrome://flags/#top-chrome-toasts' in the URL bar at the top. Press Enter to open the 'Experiments' page.

Next, select Enabled from the Top Chrome Toasts dropdown menu. Close and restart Google Chrome to apply the changes.

Apart from the ‘On’ option, three other options include ‘On with 8 sec’, ‘On with 10 sec’ and ‘On with 12 sec’. These options allow you to change the default timeline during which notifications remain visible on the screen. For example, if you choose ‘On with 10 sec’, the pop-up notification will remain on the screen for 10 seconds.
