AutoDesk is one of the best tools for 3D animation, visual effects, and production management. However, while trying to install Autodesk, we noticed that it gets stuck in an installation loop. So, in this post, we will see what to do when AutoDesk gets stuck in the preparing to install loop on Windows 11/10.
Fixing AutoDesk Preparing to Install Loop on Windows 11
If AutoDesk gets stuck in the preparing to install loop and nothing happens, you need to follow the solutions mentioned below to resolve the issue.
- Run the installation media as administrator
- Reinstall .NET Framework
- Check if the AutoDesk installation is corrupted
- Install offline
- Clean the corrupted registry and try again
Let’s talk about them in detail.
1] Run the installation media as administrator
First, we run the installation media with administrative privileges as there might be some files that need more privileges. Right-click on the AutoDesk setup file and run them as administrator. Now, when you get the UAC prompt, click Yes. You can generally go ahead with the installation and check if that fixes the problem.
2] Reinstall .NET Framework
.NET Framework allows programs created using the .NET programming language to run without any issues. Since AutoDesk is one such program, it will try to use .NET and if there is any problem with that, you will have a problem installing or using the program. So, follow the steps mentioned below to do the same.
- Open Control Panel by searching for it in the Start menu.
- Change View to Large Icons.
- Now, go to Programs and Features.
- Click on Turn Windows features on or off.
- Look for .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Series), uncheck both of them and click OK.
- Now, restart your computer, open the window and check both options again to install them again.
Hopefully, this will resolve the issue.
3] Check if AutoDesk installation is blocked
Next to this we have to check that the registry is not blocking AutoDesk executables. This is something that would normally be changed by installing an application that has the privilege to mess with the registry. To do this, the following steps have to be followed.
- Open Run with Win + R, typing "regedit" and press OK when the UAC prompt appears.
- Next, you have to go to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionImage File Execution OptionsC/code>
- From the left section of the screen, you have to look for the Autodesk executable key, once you find it, double-click on it.
- Check if you see a value called Debugger. Once you find it, double-click on it and check if the value data is set to Blocked.
- If you see Debugger with Blocked as its value, remove it.
- You have to do this with all the keys of the AutoDesk executable (basically, files with .exe extension).
- If you can't find any debugger value in your Registry, go to C:\Program Files\Autodesl\AdODISV1 in File Explorer and delete the RemoveODIS.exe file.
- Take a backup and delete the contents of the C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ODIS folder.
- Once done, go to autodesk.com and download the latest version of the installer.
- After downloading, right-click on the installer and run as administrator.
- Click Yes when UAC prompts you.
Finally, check if this issue has been resolved.
4] Perform offline installation
Sometimes when you run the installation media, the installer gets stuck on the “Preparing” or “Preparing to install” screen because it starts looking for an update. Sometimes, it can find it and then download and install the update. However, since the installation is stuck in your case, we will proceed with the offline installation.
To do so, open Command Prompt as administrator.
Now, go to the location where the installation file is stored using the CD or Change Directory command.
cdC:AutodeskAutodesk_3ds_Max_2021_EFGJKPS_Win_64bit
You might have a different path, so go to C:Autodesk and then find the name of the folder that contains the Setup.exe file.
Then run the following command.
setup.exe --no update
Let the installation run and then check if it is installed.
5] Clean Corrupted Registry and Try Again
You may also encounter this problem if there are some corrupted parts of the registry. To remove them you can use a free registry cleaner like CCleaner. Download the utility, scan your system, fix all the corrupted items and then run the AutoDesk installation wizard.
