God of War Ragnarok offers a wealth of content, including countless bosses and sprawling areas to explore. It's so rich in detail that you're unlikely to experience everything the game has to offer in a single playthrough.
Just when you think you've figured it all out, God of War Ragnarok surprises you with a massive secret area in Vanaheim. This hidden gem can easily be missed if you don't pay close attention to your surroundings. Within this area, you'll find unique side quests, challenging bosses, rare resources, and much more. The guide below covers everything you need to know about this secret location.
How to Unlock the Crater Region in Vanaheim
The Crater Region can only be unlocked after completing the quest "The Creatures of Prophecy," where you help Freyr (Freya's brother) with a major problem and return to Freyr's camp. You'll know if you've already completed this quest. Once you're done, follow these steps:
- Head to the nearest Mystic Portal
- On your way, you'll encounter Helka, the dog-pig-like creature from Freyr's camp. Helka will direct you to follow her, starting the side quest "The Scent of Survival."
- Follow Helka
- Follow Helka's trail and hop on a boat when you reach the water.
- Take the newly opened path to the right.
- Once you're back on land, continue following Helka. Defeat any enemies you encounter along the way.
- Restore the Sunlight
- Eventually, you'll reach a Celestial Altar. Use it to summon Skoll, the wolf who brings back the sun, to continue moving forward.
- Reach the Cliff
- Continue following Helka until you reach a cliff.
- Use your airboat here and watch the cutscene.
In fact, she'll later take you to the undiscovered area of Vanaheim known as The Crater.
What to do after reaching the Crater
After exploring a bit, you'll find a mystical portal nearby. From here, you have a few options:
- Continue with your main quest as usual.
- Visit any other realm, as you did before.
- Alternatively, take your time exploring this new region, which is packed with content.
The Crater provides you with plenty of activities, challenges—enough to keep you entertained for over ten hours—but be prepared: most of the bosses present in this area are somewhat challenging. If these prove too tough for you, you can always come back later, once you've leveled up and upgraded your gear.
Completing the Crater region before finishing the main story is highly recommended, as it adds a lot to the overall experience and prepares you for the game's final challenges. But fear not, as this is explored after the game, with dialogue and character interactions explaining it.
