If you don't know how to fix the VPMC module power failure in VMware Workstation, here is a step-by-step guide that will help you.

This was the error message that was thrown in VMware Workstation after a migration of a virtual machine to new hardware or powering on a newly created one: Module 'VPMC' Power on failed. In this post learn what is the VPMC module and how you can troubleshoot this issue.

On this host, virtualized performance counters are not supported by VMware Workstation.

The power on of the 'VPMC' module was unsuccessful.

Attempt to launch the virtual machine canceled.

Power on of the 'VPMC' module failed on VMware Workstation.

VPMC is the abbreviation of Virtual CPU Performance Monitoring Counters module of VMware. These counters have been responsible for maintaining a track record regarding the performance of virtual machine's CPUs. You can follow the methods provided below if you are receiving "Power on of Module 'VPMC' failed" error message in VMware Workstation.

Stop the CPU performance metrics.

Disable Hardware Virtualization

Restore the virtual machine image.

Disable Hyper-V

Let us now dive into their details.

1. Disable CPU performance counters.

Each computing unit performance monitoring counter (PMCs) enables the programs to monitor and evaluate the efficiency of the processor. Software profilers along with other similar tools usually make use of these counters. To remove the CPU Performance counter, do one of the following: Using the VMware Workstation software and changing the settings for the VM; Editing the file.vmx in the VM and setting VPMC=False.

Below are general steps to disable CPU performance counters on a virtual machine. Open its properties in VMware Workstation.

Shut down the virtual machine by opening VMware Workstation, right-click on it, and go to Power > Power off.

Then right-click on the virtual machine icon and select Settings.

Click on the Hardware tab afterward.

The Virtualization engine is located in the Processors section. De-select the check box beside Virtualize CPU performance counters.

Click OK to save the changes.

At the end, power on the virtual machine to see if the problem exists any longer.

If you want to fix this problem by editing the .VMX file, for a deployment virtual machine, you will have to navigate to the folder where you store your virtual machine. Like most of my colleagues, I store mine at the following directory: C:UsersyusufOneDriveDocumentsVirtual MachinesDebian 12.x 64-bit, but most of the time, it looks something like this: your-home-directory/Virtual Machines/Debian 12.x 64-bit. You may edit-or add-the following line ex: vpmc.enable = "FALSE" by right-clicking on the VMX file.

2. Hardware virtualization should be disabled.

Sometimes after disabling CPU Performance Monitoring Counters, this leads to another error message, which states that the virtual machine failed to start because the operation is not supported on nested virtualization and also the power on of Module 'HV' failed. This can be fixed by going to the settings of the virtual machine and turning either off the hardware or the nested virtualization.

To reproduce this, it is simple; just follow the procedures below.

Shut down your virtual computer, opening up VMware Workstation.

Open the context menu of the virtual machine and click on "Settings" in the options of the context menu.

In the Hardware menu, click Processors.

Uncheck the checkbox beside Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI under the Virtualization engine section.

Click the "Ok" button to complete your change.

Lastly, start your virtual computer to verify if this issue has been resolved.

3. Re-import the VM image.

Ideally, CPU Performance Monitoring Counters would not be an issue. However, disabling it irreparably breaks a number of functionality, like the Qemu appliances, so the above fixes are best described as a workaround. Another possibility is that the virtual machine was still running while the virtual image was being created or moved to a different piece of hardware. That being said, we suggest that you exit the VM and then modify the .vmx file after exiting it. What some clients did prior to editing the .vmx file was to simply remove the VM and re-create it making sure VMware was completely shut down. They can then take the image over to a newly created virtual machine; this is one thing you could attempt.

4. Turn off Hyper-V

First, to make the virtual machines with the help of Hyper-V Manager, we have to turn on the Hyper-V, which is an application of Windows Hypervisor. We recommend you turn it off because we are trying to make a virtual machine using VMware Workstation. Here are the steps that you need to follow in order to do the same.

Open the interface.

Icons can be changed to appear larger.

Click the "Programs and Features" button. Turn Windows features on or off.

Then find Hyper-V and click it off.

Click "Ok."

Then, try to recreate the virtual machine and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for these steps we hope you will resolve this error, but anyway- good luck and till next time.
