Here we leave you a complete guide so you can learn how to fix it WARNING: Make a backup of your data and replace your hard drive
If you power on your Windows 11 or 10 computer and you see a warning which says, "Please back up your data and replace your hard disk drive," the methods below will be of help. If it is about to crash, you will receive this message. Once you power up your computer, the very first thing BIOS does is check the hardware. In case any hardware malfunction has been detected, it will show up as a notification on the screen. Users who experienced this problem were not able to boot into Windows.
Here is the full message of the warning:
Caution: You should replace your hard drive and make a copy of your data. Unpredictable failure might happen soon.
Before you go ahead and replace your hard drive, make sure that you back up all of your data.
This is the message that shows an error condition. If this message appears, it is the time to replace your hard drive and back up your data. Therefore, you need a new one. Sometimes, even if the hard drive is fine, the BIOS will also display this error message as a warning. If you are facing this problem and cannot successfully open the Windows option, just try these suggestions.
Repair Startup Run
If it does, turn off the SMART Self Test.
Backup your data using Windows Recovery Environment.
Transfer the hard drive to another functional computer
Update firmware on your hard drive
The above fixes will be elaborated on hereafter;
1. Startup repair
With the built-in Startup Repair utility from Windows, users can repair whatever is necessary to get the boot and other issues resolved. If it is a software-related problem, one can try launching Startup Repair.
This involves launching the Windows Recovery Environment for Startup Repair. The Windows Recovery Environment can be accessed by interrupting the normal boot process, in situations where you cannot boot into Windows. Now, the problem is that if your BIOS is carrying out a hard drive test, it will halt the normal booting early, so therefore the above procedure will not work. What you need here is a USB flash device capable of booting into Windows.
Transfer the ISO onto a working machine and make sure that the USB flash drive is bootable using third-party utilities like Rufus. Connect the USB flash drive and go into your computer's BIOS. Using BIOS settings, adjust the order of the different drive boots.
A screen will pop up to install Windows. Go to the bottom left corner and click on the link that says Repair your machine. In the menu 'Troubleshoot', click Startup Repair.
2. If available, turn off SMART Self Test.
Disabling the SMART Self Test will allow you to boot into Windows and make a backup of your files if the Startup Repair should fail to work. You might have to change settings in your BIOS to be able to do that. For additional information about how to disable this feature, consult your user manual or visit the support website for your computer manufacturer.
Now, I will walk you through the steps to disable this feature on the ASUS motherboard.
Put your computer into Hibernation/Sleep.
Start pressing and holding down the F2 key in order to access the power options menu of the computer.
You will get the BIOS setup menu on your PC; now you can let go of the F2 key.
Advanced Mode
Click on SMART Settings option.
Save changes and then exit SMART Self Test menu.
Save Changes and Exit.
Windows can now be booted into. Copy your data and replace the hard drive if broken immediately after boot. If you install Windows onto the new hard drive, you may turn the SMART Self Test back on.

3. Back up your data with Windows Recovery Environment.
You may not be able to boot into Windows, but you can backup your data with Windows Recovery Environment. Open the Advanced Startup Options box and click on Troubleshoot. In the popped Command Prompt window, type "Notepad" then press Enter.
The above command will launch Notepad in the Windows Recovery Environment. Now, by pressing Ctrl+O keys, you will get access to all of your hard disks, partitions as well as external storage devices. Opening the partition of affected hard drive, you can duplicate your data. You can copy-paste the data in the removable storage medium. Yes, you can save the backup of your data but it will take some time.
4. Transfer the hard drive to another working computer.
You will need one working computer for this patch. Turn on your computer and open the casing. Remove the affected hard disk and install it on the other working computer, provided that there is a free slot. If not, you can also attach it via a hard disk case externally. After your hard drive has been detected, you can now back it up.
5. Perform a firmware update on your hard disk.
This may also be because of an older version of the firmware installed on your hard drive. Your hard disc is okay, but firmware is out of date. You can configure the latest available firmware update on any other computer and then use it on your own. This may hopefully fix this problem.
For that, access the manufacturer's website to know how to upgrade the firmware of your hard drive.
Finally, we hope this tutorial has resolved the problem-that's all for now.
