Is Xilonen a DPS or support?

Her equipment allows Xilonen to support teammates off-field and deal damage on-field. Irrespective of his versatility, Xilonen shines better in a supporting role than in a DPS. Even without Constellation 2, playing Xilonen as an on-field DPS requires a 5-star CRIT weapon and at least Constellation 2, if you insist on doing so.

How to play support Xilonen

Xilonen can only be an off-field support for teams which contain two Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo characters. Since this team element need drastically changes Xilonen's functionality, it is key. If you use Xilonen's Skill, you will see, beside her Nightsoul meter, three triangles colored in; based on the colors of those triangles, you'll know whether your team qualifies: there can be no more than one yellow triangle, and if two triangles are any shade of orange, blue, purple, or light blue, then Xilonen will be a part of your team's work. After you've assembled your squad, the next thing you'll want to know is your rotation.

Xilonen should take the field before your on-field DPS so that her buffs may trigger. Alternatively, you use Xilonen's Burst, Skill, and two Normal Attacks; she should be able to load up her Nightsoul meter and then delete it after two Normal Attacks. The meter passively drains over time, so if your combination is stopped, you might have to use an extra Normal Attack to fill it up. Xilonen's Burst passively heals the on-field character and triggers her on-field debuffs upon filling up the Nightsoul meter. After using Xilonen's Normal Attacks, you can swap her out for your on-field DPS. This will make them hit harder and recover faster. 

How to play DPS Xilonen

Unless you're a whale or really dedicated, Xilonen isn't the DPS build for you. While she is never going to get that 5-star, her damage is good enough to clear most content. I have a DPS C0 Xilonen with Uraku Misugiri, and she does approximately 20-30% more damage than my C6 Noelle with Redhorn Stonethresher, and we are on similar-composition teams. Personal mileage may vary.

To DPS Xilonen, you do need at least two Geo teammates. I recommend using Gorou with Albedo or Chiori. If not, Yun Jin, Zhongli, or Navia can be used as placeholders. Now try to cast Xilonen's Skill when your team is ready, and you should see at least two yellow triangles besides her Nightsoul meter.

When Xilonen has two Geo teammates, a whole different set of tools becomes available to him. Her Nightsoul meter, for example, will gradually drain with time instead of getting filled up by Normal Attacks. Most of her damage will come from Normal Attacks since when her Skill is up, they deal more Geo damage.

After setting up your supports' abilities, you can play Xilonen on-field as a DPS by cycling through them. To start, take Xilonen; pop her Burst and then Skill. Finally, before her Nightsoul meter expires, hit as many Normal Attacks as possible. The typical format is a total of twelve hits, which is accomplished with three sets of four Normal Attack combos.
