How To Unlock Max Moves in Pokemon GO

Unlike normal Fast and Charged moves, Dynamax Pokémon have special move types known as Max Moves in Pokémon GO. Every Dynamax Pokémon starts with one Max Move. To fully conquer the Dynamax battlefield, though, it is important to build up your arsenal of Max Moves.

What Are Max Moves in Pokemon GO?

Max Moves are special attacks used by Dynamax-capable Pokémon in Max Battles. Only Pokémon that are able to Dynamax can have Max Moves. These powerful moves appear beneath your standard Gym & Raid moves on your Pokémon but can only be used during a Max Battle encounter.

When you catch a fresh Dynamax Pokémon, it'll know but a single Max Move. In fact, it can learn two more. But you'll have to first unlock them in your Pokemon's repertoire.

How To Unlock New Max Moves in Pokemon GO

Max Moves for your Pokémon are listed in its info screen. Those that are locked will be grayed in with the word "Locked" where the move level would otherwise appear.

To unlock a Max Move, tap its icon. A training cost will then be shown to you made up of Max Particles (MP) and Pokémon Candy. For example, teaching Dynamax Squirtle the Max Guard costs 400 MP and 50 Squirtle Candy.

It's pretty consistent, really, with all the currently available Dynamax Pokémon doing it this way. All the new moves will cost 400 MP and 50 of that Pokémon's respective candies. After having these resources, tap the Train in order to unlock the move.

During the Max Battles, one can scroll through their list of unlocked Max Moves to know which moves to use against the opponent. It is allowed to use three Max Moves per battle; therefore, one has to choose wisely to win the battle.

How To Level Up Max Moves in Pokemon GO

Newly unlocked Max Moves start at Level 1. To realize its full potential, though, you will still have to continue training your Pokémon to level up each of the Max Moves. In any case, this requires even more resources.

To upgrade any Max Move, tap on its icon in the Pokémon profile. You'll see the training cost, which for the most part, is an additional 600 MP and 100 Pokémon Candy to make a move from Level 1 to Level 2.

While the MP cost is decent, Candy consumption will be high, especially if you wish to evolve a Dynamax Pokémon into its final form, like Squirtle, and power up all three Max Moves. You will have to catch numerous Squirtle for this purpose.

This way, you can provide your Dynamax Pokémon with some essential training in Max Moves and get it ready to go with an advantage in most Max Battles.
