How do I choose a faction?

This is what Fallout London does differently from most RPG faction systems—giving the player the most real agency over the alignment of their character. While many games make the player choose early on which faction they're going to essentially dedicate themselves to, in Fallout London, players are allowed to organically discover and interact with the various groups as they play through the main storyline.

The methodology allows for a more expansive and fluid experience for the player. One is less inclined to be railroaded down a particular track, and can freely do all options available to him, develop relationships with different factions, and work out exactly which faction, if any, to ally with.

An example of this liberty would be the case of the Vagabonds' introduction through the character Sebastian Gaunt. Players meet Gaunt when finishing up the prologue and progressing through the "On the Mend" quest. The offer to join the Vagabonds is part of that encounter; however, none of it is forced. This exemplifies, at the very least, the emphasis on player agency in how one chooses to progress and flow through the world of Fallout London.

Already, the very first contact with the Vagabonds heralds something greater in terms of dynamics at play within this or another faction's purview. Briefly mentioning the rival Isle of Dogs Syndicate raises questions in the player's mind and thus prepares the ground for further interactions or possible future conflicts. All these inter-fractional relationships will start to weave a complex web that gives life and flesh to the world, motivating players to dive deep into lore and analyze the goals and motives of each group.

Camelot

Beginning with the legendary tales of King Arthur and his Knights, Camelot is a clandestine resistance fighting to free London from oligarchy's iron grip. Committed to democratic principles, human rights, operating in the shadows, their aim was to overthrow the Gentry regime. When peaceful proposals were met with hostility, Camelot chose a path of militancy and ignited flames of revolution. This area of Wandsworth is their stronghold.

5th Column

At the head of this group is the charismatic and ruthless Eve Varney. The 5th Column seeks to tear apart London's present power structure, ripping it apart at the seams. In its ashes, they envision forging a new British empire, a society built upon their uncompromising ideology. It is with this populist rhetoric, promising them change, that they have garnered quite a large following from amongst the disenfranchised population of the city.

Gentry

The Gentry constitute the ruling class of London, originally from the fragments of pre-war aristocracy and the government of Britain. Supposedly, their power is founded upon a democratic parliament, though it really bases on an enigmatic Queen, unseen for decades. Having this grandiose vision of restoring old England's pride to the United Kingdom, they fashioned a tribute-and-protection system. In return for demanding loyalty and resources, these people offer security and aid to the populace. Their seat of power is the iconic Westminster.

Tommies

The Tommies are a heavily armed force dressed up as a civilian militia keeping order in ruined London. Their role as enforcers for the ruling Gentry is rather more pronounced. With advanced technology, the Tommies are blindly loyal to their masters, often acting as their oppressive fist, but mostly remain largely unaware of their true function within the power structure.

Isle of Dogs Syndicate

The Isle of Dogs Syndicate is a powerful criminal organization ruling Millwall in East London under the leadership of Thomas Black in an iron-fisted regime. The group gains power and influence by "marrying" its operations with those of the Gentry through supplies and munitions. This is sadly a group utilizing labor in thrall to the Westminster oligarchy. Their nemeses are the Vagabonds, another gang orbiting around One Canada Water.

Vagabonds

What was once an underworld powerhouse now fights for relevance against the Isle of Dogs Syndicate. Guided by the suave, inimitable Sebastian Gaunt, the faction seeks to reclaim former glories and forge a safer future for its membership.

Shrouded in secrecy, the 5th Column remains the most enigmatic faction in the game. Rumored to be controlled by high-ranking British government scientists, this clandestine organization has infiltrated other major factions with its spies. Led by the enigmatic Mr. or Ms. Smythe, the 5th Column's true objectives remain a subject of intense speculation.
