VIDEO West Elm In the Studio with Cody Hoyt TV commercial 2020 • Brooklyn-based artist Cody Hoyt takes us inside West Elm Makers Studio as he works on his new collection of ceramics and textiles. 00:00 with grids there seems to be some sort 00:02 of fundamental truth behind it the 00:04 geometry all fits together and there's a 00:06 logic that's the catharsis I look for as 00:08 an artist is to make sense out of 00:10 nothing 00:13 my name is Cody Hoyt I'm an artist based 00:16 in Brooklyn New York I'm working on a 00:18 collection of ceramics and textiles for 00:20 the artists the Residence program in a 00:22 West Elm maker studio I think it's great 00:26 that West stone has decided to invite 00:27 actual studio artists come in and work 00:30 in the studio and is developing products 00:32 based on their actual studio process 00:34 I like collaborating with Westone 00:36 because the scope and scale of a project 00:38 is something I never could have done on 00:39 my own I wanted to come in and through a 00:42 communication and collaboration with 00:43 West Elm adapt my vision into something 00:45 that ultimately will become mass-market 00:47 and is suitable for production I usually 00:50 start with paper I use rulers and pens 00:52 and I try to start basic and then 00:54 evolved from there and try to find 00:55 complexity over time if I find something 00:57 that I like basically goes right down 00:58 onto the clay from there for this 01:02 collection I started with triangle grids 01:05 and square grids and I came up with 01:07 various themes and patterns but have an 01:09 optical quality and they have a bit of 01:12 an illusory element to them which 01:14 disguises the flat surface 01:16 [Music] 01:18 I was mainly interested in trying to 01:24 find a way to distill the heart and soul 01:26 of what my work is into something that 01:28 is more minimal and streamlines what my 01:32 work is about is making things that 01:34 invite closer inspection and might make 01:35 somebody more curious or wonder about 01:38 what some thing is made of how it was 01:39 made where it came from and who made it 01:41 I think it's really exciting and 01:44 interesting that you can take something 01:46 as pedestrian and basic as a grid and 01:48 then work on that intuitively and 01:51 extract something that's very at ease 01:53 and cretak in virtuosic in a way that's 01:56 sort of a blueprint for what may be the 01:58 idea of human expression could be to 02:00 start with nothing and end up with the 02:02 best thing anyone could possibly think 02:03 of- advertisement spot 2020
