have you been to the factory before 00:18 been excited i have been 00:20 um up to the customer experience center 00:22 and we did do the factory tour 00:24 i've never met joel morrow before who is 00:27 joel 00:27 well i've been driving for 33 years 00:32 i spent some time you know putting 00:33 around the farm putting around the 00:35 shop and trucks moving trailers when i 00:37 was when i was younger 00:38 i run right around four and a half 00:40 million miles 00:42 give or take you focus specification 00:44 wise 00:45 on on having a truck that can be used in 00:48 in various ways in various applications 00:51 instead of 00:52 having an application system you come to 00:54 a one size fits all 00:55 and is that is that because poker has a 00:57 lot of different applications 00:59 well all trucking companies typically 01:02 have 01:02 different applications within their 01:04 business i mean even the single truck 01:06 operator 01:07 is not always on a four-lane highway at 01:10 75 mile an hour sometimes they're 01:12 they're running into town sometimes 01:14 they're on a two-lane highway with 80 01:16 000 pounds sometimes they're empty 01:18 you know just really moving it down the 01:21 down the interstate 01:22 so i look at these as all maybe 01:25 subsets of a duty cycle within within a 01:28 day you're seeing multiple different 01:30 uses that the truck's going to need to 01:31 be able to adapt to 01:33 and i think what we're doing today with 01:36 the deep reduction transmission with 01:38 overdrive 01:39 with the with the turbo compounded 01:41 engine that runs really good at low rpm 01:43 with 01:44 some of the shift logics we're working 01:46 on we are able to adapt to 01:48 every single miniature duty cycle we see 01:52 throughout the day in order to maintain 01:54 efficiency 01:55 at a very very high level regardless of 01:57 what we're doing 01:58 there's really nothing in your typical 02:02 duty cycle 02:03 that this truck is going to run up 02:04 against that it will not excel at and 02:06 that's kind of unique 02:07 generally it's always a balance and 02:09 trade-off with traditional gearing 02:11 or with direct drive gearing and with 02:15 with the super downsped overdrive 02:17 concept we can do it all 02:19 right i hear there's a little bit of an 02:21 epic story behind this so how 02:23 did you kind of get you know connected 02:25 with volvo 02:27 how did that relationship start oh i 02:29 wanted to 02:30 build a pusher lift axle truck 02:33 several years ago i'd done some research 02:36 and i i was watching what was going on 02:38 over in europe and 02:40 of course they have higher fuel prices 02:43 so efficiency over there 02:45 at the time was even more important than 02:46 it was over here 02:48 so i really wanted to do this and just 02:51 kind of on a whim i rolled into a 02:53 volvo dealer i walked in and talked to 02:55 sales guy and 02:56 and um the sales person said 03:00 i know somebody you need to talk to and 03:01 he picked up the phone and he dialed a 03:03 number and he handed me the phone 03:04 he said talk to this guy we talked for 03:07 about 03:07 three minutes and he said i'll be on a 03:09 plane up to see you tomorrow i said okay 03:12 so rest kind of history after that and 03:14 so like what 03:15 when you switch to the gc engine what 03:17 type of fuel efficiency improvement did 03:18 you see 03:20 13 liter to 13 liter was pretty dramatic 03:23 coming from the bg to the tc we're 03:26 looking at three quarters of a mile a 03:27 gallon 03:28 in most instances a guy that's 03:31 interested in fuel economy can see a 03:33 whole mile a gallon 03:35 of those that's huge yeah it is the the 03:37 tc can do some things 03:39 on grade with weight at low rpm that no 03:42 other 03:43 not even the big bore the 15 liter you 03:44 know a lot of people associate 03:46 displacement 03:47 with how well it can pull down low and 03:50 and that's 03:50 that's kind of a fallacy um the the tc 03:54 and the 13 liter well i'll pull 03:57 the 15 liter big bore and even 16 liter 04:00 big bore 04:01 engines from other manufacturers at low 04:03 rpm 04:04 and how i guess yeah how has volvo 04:07 helped you over the years you've 04:09 definitely helped volvo i i can i can 04:11 say that for a fact you know 04:12 our relationship with you but you know 04:14 it 04:15 helped develop the 6x2 adaptive loading 04:17 but but how has volvo helped you in turn 04:20 well we we do a lot of test work 04:22 together and 04:23 some of the the concepts that we try are 04:26 pre-production stuff and i mean there's 04:29 there's just no way that i could do that 04:31 on my own so 04:32 when i do get some of these ideas that 04:34 are way way out there 04:35 um they're willing to listen and and 04:38 that's 04:39 that is that's unique because you know i 04:42 like i said i approached 04:43 some other oems with this stuff years 04:45 ago and they just kind of giggle at you 04:46 you know like i'm getting out of my face 04:48 what do you know 04:49 and there are a lot of sharp guys out 04:51 here driving around that have a lot of 04:52 good ideas that the oems need 04:55 to pay attention to the driver because 04:57 let's face it 04:58 an engineer is only as good as their 05:01 feedback 05:02 i agree completely with that and that's 05:05 why we got to listen to you and that's 05:06 why 05:07 i you know it's so important to have 05:09 these and have these conversations but 05:11 i was gonna say don't give away the 05:12 secrets about your testing some 05:13 pre-production 05:14 stuff they don't need to know that we 05:17 gotta keep i don't give them any details 05:19 but 05:19 i mean that's what it is and that's 05:21 that's what makes it exciting and that's 05:23 that's what drives the process you know 05:25 that's that's true too 05:26 so earlier i i there was something i was 05:28 thinking about you know we were talking 05:29 earlier 05:30 a truck is a tool it's so important to 05:32 have you know the right spec 05:34 and and you know yes you could build 05:36 this great volvo truck on paper that has 05:39 a great spec for 05:40 for this specific speed but if it 05:43 changes speeds 05:44 changes you know a little bit of what 05:46 it's doing it throws it off so it's 05:48 it's about how the volvo truck provides 05:51 fuel efficiency but you can also 05:53 have the versatility so you can get that 05:55 fuel efficiency 05:56 at different uh points and areas yeah 05:58 versatility efficiency adaptability 06:01 and you know like in the name adaptive 06:03 loading 06:04 that is what is is critical is the 06:07 ability to adapt to the environment 06:09 you're operating in you may not always 06:12 be 06:12 the most efficient spec on paper you may 06:15 be close but it may not be but if you 06:17 are ultimately more adaptable over a 06:19 wider range 06:20 you have a better truck and a truck that 06:22 the driver is going to be happy in 06:24 a truck that the bean counter is going 06:25 to be happy with a truck that the people 06:28 in the shop are going to be happy with 06:29 so let's make everybody happy let's make 06:32 it a win-win-win 06:33 so well i'm trying to put this in like a 06:36 a catchphrase what is it volvo 06:38 has great fuel efficiency but the thing 06:40 that sets 06:41 the volvo truck apart is that with the 06:44 tc engine with all the 06:46 features the fuel efficient features you 06:48 have adaptability with that fuel 06:50 efficiency you can 06:52 help ensure you can get it across the 06:54 range
