VIDEO State Farm Middle School Student Group "Surface 71" Cleans Up Beaches TV commercial 2020 • Young people living the day-to-day impact of a changing environment vowed to make a difference in their Florida community through outreach and action. Like az good neighbor, State Farm is there.® 00:08 71% of the earth's surface is water and 00:11 only 1% of it is actually drinkable 00:14 [Music] 00:22 in our middle school we really started 00:24 to see that the water quality was 00:26 getting worse everything was just kind 00:28 of going downhill and we saw that 00:30 problem and we wanted to do our best to 00:33 fix it 00:34 kids were noticing a lot of trash 00:36 washing up and that conversation spun 00:38 into doing a project regarding ocean 00:41 plastics and marine health 00:43 [Music] 00:47 so we attend our foundation had been 00:48 working with Stephanie Killingsworth 00:50 at Ken Austin middle school and 00:51 exploring new ways to engage her 00:53 students in ocean science research and 00:54 education if you're picking up a couple 00:58 pieces of plastic you're helping maybe 01:01 one sea animal stay alive we learned in 01:05 depth about these things they realize 01:06 how big a problem they were the majority 01:09 but we're finding is household items and 01:11 plastics even if it's in your recycle 01:13 bin it could come out and it goes down 01:14 the stream and there it is in our 01:16 waterways 01:17 [Music] 01:20 after we spoke with our teacher about 01:23 starting service 71 we then went to Palm 01:26 Beach philanthropy tank and we were 01:27 awarded $12,000 I'm very proud of our 01:30 water refill stations at our school it's 01:32 really cool like being able to walk by 01:33 it 01:33 it seemed like you know the number of 01:35 how many bottles are saved there's a lot 01:37 of moving components to doing something 01:39 like this and some of the big concepts 01:41 that they got out of a project like this 01:43 is going out into the community and 01:46 raising awareness through different 01:48 events people need to know that they're 01:50 not alone and even one small change can 01:53 lead to so much more I want to expand so 01:56 471 out of just West Palm Beach they're 01:59 not just sitting at home and you know 02:01 talking about it they are doing 02:02 something about it- advertisement spot 2020
