Frequently asked questions and information about AT&T / Cingular Wireless / Samsung BlackJack - TV Commercial 2007 | AT&T ad
What was the Samsung BlackJack?
In late 2006, Samsung released a smartphone that it called the BlackJack in some markets and the Jack in others. It was a far cry from the smartphones of today, but it was a high-end device for the time. A few months after the launch, AT&T began running commercials for the Samsung BlackJack under its Cingular brand. The ad was a humorous dialogue between two friends that extolled the qualities and features of the Korean company’s handset and the services offered by Cingular. The name of the phone is an interesting choice from Samsung as there are no immediate signs that could suggest that the company has taken inspiration from the popular card game. Blackjack is a game that can be
traced back to around the 17th century AD, though it was known as Trente-un at the time. Many products and media productions have been created that take inspiration from the game, including major Hollywood movies like 21 (2008). However, none of this can be seen in the phone. Some have speculated that the name was chosen due to the popularity of Blackberry devices at the time, though there is no concrete evidence to show this is what influenced the naming decision. The Samsung BlackJack supported 3G data transfers through HSDPA, EDGE, and GPRS but did not support WiFi. However, users could connect to other devices through a Bluetooth 2.0 connection. It packed in 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM and ran on the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system. File storage was supported through a microSD card slot, as was common at the time.
Its single 1.3-megapixel camera lens could take photos in resolutions of up to 1280 x 960, but could only manage video recording in either 176 x 144 or 320 x 240.
Caption: The BlackJack shared many of the features and stylings of the then-market-leading BlackBerry A product of its timeThe Samsung BlackJack and the AT&T Cingular ad are both products of their time. The smartphone itself is very different to the devices that we commonly use today. In fact, the BlackJack looks very dated when compared to contemporary devices like Samsung’s Galaxy range and the iPhone. The handset uses a hardware QWERTY keyboard, a four-way directional pad, and additional function keys, with the screen taking up around half of the actual device. While dated today, these features were cutting-edge at the time and were commonly seen on
smartphones from brands like Research In Motion (BlackBerry). When it was released in 2006, Android didn’t exist and iOS wouldn’t be released for several more months. Instead, it was Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating systems that were loaded onto smartphones, explaining why Samsung chose Windows over its now-standard Android OS. Even the ads for new phones like the
Galaxy S21 series are very different. Unlike the BlackJack commercial, which uses a dialogue between two guys to communicate the unique features of the device and the Cingular package, Samsung’s latest ad uses a pop song that repeatedly sings the words “big shot” while showing off the phone’s high-definition camera functionality. The opening line in the BlackJack ad is “your new TV is awesome!”, to which the friend replies “that’s not a TV dude, that’s my new phone”. The first guy expresses shock at this, despite the fact that the screen is nowhere near the size of a modern TV. While laughable now, it may have been a plausible comment to make back then as many people still had much smaller television sets at home. What aspect ratio was the AT&T commercial shot in?The AT&T commercial was also shot in 4:3 aspect ratio, as opposed to the now-standard 16:9 wide-screen format. Were there other commercials from AT&T and Cingular for the Samsung BlackJack?Yes, there were a range of ads that focused on different elements of the phone, including its MP3 player, access to clips of TV shows, and more. - advertisement spot 2021
