development of Planet Coaster: Console Edition. 00:09 [Music] 00:13 when you move a game like planet 00:14 coaster onto console everything changes 00:18 really because you're playing with a 00:19 gamepad of course there aren't really 00:21 established conventions 00:23 for how you control and interact with a 00:25 game like this on console because there 00:27 isn't really a game 00:28 like this on console we wanted to bring 00:30 the full planet poster experience to our 00:32 console players 00:33 so rather than looking at things that 00:35 didn't fit so well on console and saying 00:37 well we've got to remove these to make 00:38 it work better 00:39 we instead went with the approach of 00:40 well how can we change it to make it 00:43 work better with the console one of the 00:45 key development processes we went 00:47 through was 00:47 ensuring the game was fun to play easy 00:50 to access 00:50 and intuitive but still retains the 00:53 level of detail in the construction and 00:55 management that you can go into with 00:56 planet coaster so as part of planet 00:58 coaster console we've added a new camera 01:00 mode that allows you to build from the 01:01 perspective of the track as you go 01:03 around 01:03 and really feel like you're kind of 01:04 riding the coaster as you place piece by 01:06 piece 01:06 as you're moving left and right and as 01:08 you're doing your sort of bank turns and 01:10 things the camera will actually 01:11 follow the track you get the experience 01:13 of almost riding the roller coaster 01:15 as you're building it camera systems for 01:17 games are 01:18 extensive and there's a lot more to them 01:21 than just coming up to them that sounds 01:23 great in theory and implementing it 01:24 if it's slightly off it feels completely 01:27 wrong even if it's off in a way that you 01:29 can't quite pinpoint 01:30 so a lot of what we did was trial and 01:32 error changing things 01:33 testing them out getting feedback 01:35 tweaking them to make sure that it all 01:37 just 01:37 felt right when you're using a console 01:40 one of the goals 01:41 we had with planet coaster console was 01:43 making it a lot more accessible to new 01:45 players 01:46 whilst maintaining the depth that's 01:47 there for the more advanced players 01:49 so for the ui we rebuild everything 01:52 so we build um we rework how how it's 01:55 supposed to 01:56 how it's interfaced with the user how 01:58 buttons and 01:59 panels and prompts are all redesigned so 02:02 that 02:02 players have a better experience playing 02:04 on the console one of the advantages of 02:07 really rethinking the ui and rethinking 02:09 the tools from a console perspective 02:11 is that we're able to add features that 02:13 actually build 02:14 a layer of consistency between different 02:16 tools so for example with the radial 02:18 menu which 02:18 offers quick access to key actions a bit 02:21 like the keyboard shortcuts of the 02:22 original game 02:23 the radial menu updates with every 02:25 different edit mode that you go into so 02:27 whether you're editing track or placing 02:28 buildings 02:29 the shortcuts available to you will be 02:31 specific to that mode 02:32 for example if you were placing track 02:34 you might be able to access the 02:35 different smoothing options 02:37 to make your track as beautiful to ride 02:39 for your guests as possible 02:40 whereas when you're editing scenery it 02:42 gives you quick and easy access to 02:43 duplication 02:44 and advanced move tools i've been really 02:46 really pleased with how 02:47 seamless and natural it feels when 02:49 you're manipulating track pieces using 02:51 the joysticks 02:52 placing track down it's really really 02:54 quick and it's really really easy 02:56 so one of the things we've done to help 02:57 people start creating a park 02:59 as quickly as possible and as easily as 03:01 possible is we've introduced hundreds of 03:03 new blueprints and whether you want to 03:04 play sci-fi 03:05 fantasy or fairy tale blueprints there's 03:08 something for everyone 03:09 players who don't necessarily want to 03:11 spend hours and hours creating a 03:13 tiny little detailed building can just 03:15 select one of these blueprints 03:17 place it down and have a really really 03:19 cool looking parking next to no time 03:22 users are still able to you know craft 03:24 intricate pieces set 03:25 pieces and you know really fine tune how 03:29 they want your puck to look like so you 03:31 have that choice between whether you 03:32 want to go 03:33 right in all the details build 03:35 everything from the ground up 03:37 or start off your park with a few more 03:39 pre-made pieces just to get off to a 03:40 quicker start you have that choice of 03:42 how yo u want to play 03:43 it's remarkable really how far we've 03:45 come that you can play 03:47 a game as deep as planet coaster on a 03:48 gamepad and it just feel like the way it 03:50 was meant to
