VIDEO PlayStation Arise: A Simple Story - 3. Next Chapter: Gameplay that tells a Story Dev Diary | PS4 TV commercial 2019 • Arise: A Simple Story is available now! Arise is an emotional journey where memories come alive and time bends to your will. In this episode of Dev Diaries, Alexis Corominas and Jordi Ministral - the Game Directors - will show you how the gameplay in Arise has been created to serve the story and the Old Man's journey. 00:09 Hi, we are Piccolo Studios from Barcelona. 00:11 We are Jordi and Alexis, and we are here to 00:13 talk to you about our first game, Arise: A Simple Story. 00:21 Through gameplay, you get people to, you know, 00:25 you exponentially multiply the power of what you're 00:28 communicating to them. Because 00:29 you're not just exposing something, 00:31 you're communicating something through the actions 00:34 of the player 00:35 and that was our goal from the first 00:38 moment we had the idea of 00:41 time shifting. 00:42 So, and we said, "Okay. Remembering at some point is, 00:45 going back and forth. 00:47 An event in your mind." 00:48 So we said, "Okay. We can turn every chapter 00:50 into a timelapse." 00:51 And this to us 00:52 helps convey the idea of remembering, but 00:54 also creates a, 00:56 a setup to build 00:58 puzzles and situations which are interesting 01:00 to the player. 01:02 Actually when we were designing the game, 01:04 most of the times we never talked about puzzles. 01:07 We talked about situations, and scenes. 01:11 So, 01:12 it was the narrative first, always. 01:13 So we tried to create, you know, 01:16 the elements, 01:18 and to find the right timelapse 01:19 that could play with those elements, 01:21 that could communicate that 01:23 high-level idea into grounded mechanics. 01:26 When you shift time and you see sunflowers 01:28 orient into the sun, 01:30 you don't have to explain that. 01:31 People understand that. People expect that. 01:38 The first version of 01:39 everything that you will see in the game 01:41 was way more complex than what 01:43 was 01:44 ended up being in the game. 01:46 For example, I think in the childhood 01:48 level is the best example because we had 01:50 very interesting puzzles that, 01:52 that we had to remove because it felt like working. 01:54 And childhood is not about working. It's about 01:57 being a child. Enjoying things and being surprised by 02:00 giant things and giant animals and colors. 02:03 Then when you get into the 02:06 more adult ages and being old, then 02:09 an intellectual puzzle situation makes sense there 02:12 because being old is about thinking. 02:13 It's not about running and jumping anymore. 02:15 Most of the 02:17 situations that you find in the game 02:19 are intellectual rewards. 02:21 Not skill rewards. And that's how we did it. 02:24 Yeah. 02:25 And a lot of testing. 02:26 Yes! 02:33 Arise, it's an emotional rollercoaster. It talks about 02:36 sadness, happiness, love. 02:38 So it elt just natural that you could share all those feelings 02:42 with te people you love, with the people you care for. 02:45 So that's why we have local co-op mode. 02:47 And you can play the game with 02:51 your girlfriend, your boyfriend, your father, your daughter, 02:54 your grandfather. 02:55 So one player takes control of the Old Man. 02:58 And player two takes control of time. 03:01 We wanted both players to feel that they were 03:04 together, 03:05 doing things. So that's why we call this mode 03:07 "Together Mode." 03:09 We want to play with 03:11 our mates, with our friends, 03:13 with our fathers, with our kids. 03:15 So we designed the game so that 03:18 one player can be a hardcore gamer, the other one, 03:20 it's not necessary to be skilled, 03:23 to solve problems. 03:24 This is the idea behind the design. 03:27 This and the communication because 03:28 you have to talk to each other all the time. 03:31 Thank you for watching us talking about 03:32 our first game and we are very excited 03:34 to see your reactions.- advertisement spot 2019
