What could go wrong?0:24 Harald!0:25 Run!0:29 This is our first day on this set.0:31 We're in a beautiful quarry.0:33 Lovely weather today.0:35 We've got an amazing boat crew.0:36 We're calling them Falkies 'cause that's the name of this boat.0:41 We've just started off our journey from Novgorod0:44 on the way to Constantinople.0:46 We're on the frozen Dnieper.0:48 So we're sort of between Novgorod and the Black Sea.0:52 But we're actually in a quarry in County Wicklow,0:55 and we've turned it into a frozen river0:57 where we're driving and pulling a ten-ton boat on a sled.1:03 Well, the boat comes in at about three and half tons1:06 and goes on a trailer1:08 which had to be custom-built to take the weight.1:12 Action.1:18 So the boat and the sled is pulled by horses, storywise.1:22 Started off we were hoping four,1:24 then it went to six, and now it's eight.1:28 What is that noise?1:30 It is the ice talking.1:33 So, we put concrete down1:34 because it gives a nice, level, flat, hard surface,1:37 which, I think, gives the best look of frozen ice.1:42 We've got 3,500 square meters of concrete here.1:46 A huge amount of set dressing here just with all the snow1:49 and the chunks of ice.1:50 It's obviously a big piece to shoot in the summer in Ireland1:53 when we're meant to be in Eastern Europe during the winter.1:58 So, you know, this was kind of the first big challenge.2:05 One of the fairly tricky parts of the script,2:07 this boat gets stuck in a hole in the ice.2:09 We cannot stop!2:11 Once night falls, the river will freeze again.2:13 The sled will be trapped.2:14 We've got a big practical build of water and ice chunks2:17 that they've been stuck into.2:19 There's a lot of physical pieces, and just the engineering2:21 of getting the Falke to move into the ice and out.2:26 Now!2:33 We've got multiple tanks built into the ground here2:36 where we've got characters falling through pieces of ice.2:41 A lot of this is gonna play in camera2:43 up until we get this wall of water and flowing ice2:45 that's churning and ripping up the terrain behind them.2:50 It's coming.2:52 The ice dam has broken.2:54 We've got this big wall of water that comes down,2:56 which there's no physical way to recreate it.2:58 Everyone on board!3:00 So we work with our friends in visual effects3:02 who will put in the enormity3:04 of this crushing, devastating wall of ice.3:07 Brace yourselves!3:10 So it's a huge sequence,3:12 and it never stops moving and it just is relentless.3:15 Which is pretty epic.
