Need a show to binge watch right about now? As COVID-19 cases continue to fluctuate across the world, many continue to use their time in quarantine browsing through the selections on Netflix. For those that are in a daze trying to find the next best show, the 8-episode first season of Ratched should be your next choice.
Ratched is an American-based psychological thriller based on the 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Created by Evan Romansky and developed by Ryan Murphy, the series takes you through a carousel of thrills with series star Sarah Paulson executing in all the right ways. While this series does not take to the extreme of “American Horror Story,” it’s right up with the perfect combination of horror, thrill, and intrigue.
The setting takes place in 1947, way before the times online gaming and William Hill Sportsbook. Paulson stars as Nurse Mildred Ratched, a nurse hired by Dr. Hanover (more on him later) to work at the Lucia State Hospital. We later find out that her motive is to break free her foster brother out of the hospital. Edmund Tolleson, played by Finn Wittrock, is admitted after killing several priests and is visibly mentally unstable. We see Mildren wander through conflicts with head nurse Betsy Buckett (played by Judy Davis), and develop feelings for Gwendolyn Briggs (played by Cynthia Nixon), who is the governor’s aide.
Dr. Richard Hanover, played by Jon Jon Briones, is the director of the hospital and has a questionable medical history. A hitman is sent to kill him for an evil deed, and he is trying to hide within the hospital walls. Will Mildred save her brother? Will Dr. Hanover survive? Watch the series to find out.
Ratched was released in the middle of September 2020 and was a hit according to the Nielsen ratings. “America’s Team” for television ratings ranked the show No. 1 with a total of 48 million viewers in the first month. Other online reviewers such as Rotten Tomatoes gave the show a rating of 6.9/10. The show was renewed for a second season.
However, others such as Entertainment Weekly gave the series a low rating, citing too much sex and violence. Paulson, known for her work with “American Horror Story” brought some of those elements to this show, which explains why some would not enjoy watching this series.
