00:08 We're here on the set of our show,
00:11 celebrating Ganesh Puja.
00:15 Showing Ganesh Puja, which is
00:16 a huge holiday for Indian Hindus,
00:18 felt really fun.
00:19 And Maitreyi's character, Devi, is brought by her family
00:23 to their local high school,
00:25 which has been transformed by the local Hindu Association.
00:28 So, why are you at this lame fest?
00:29 I actually really wanted to come.
00:31 To Ganesh Puja,
00:32 at a public high school in the Valley?
00:34 Are you insane?
00:35 Ganesh Puja is really important for a lot of Hindus
00:38 because Ganesha himself
00:39 is a very important god all over India.
00:41 He's known for being the remover of all obstacles,
00:44 which I think is very relevant to Devi,
00:47 because she has a lot of obstacles in her life.
00:48 And I remember writing it
00:50 because it's a holiday that I celebrated,
00:52 and there's certain things that I really wanted to show
00:54 as a kid, like, you're kind of told,
00:56 just follow the group,
00:57 then you'll go up to the front,
00:59 and you'll offer offerings to Ganesh.
01:01 Like, you're sitting there, and a man is saying Sanskrit
01:03 that nobody understands,
01:04 and you have to repeat it.
01:06 Everybody, repeat after me.
01:14 Just kidding.
01:16 Background.
01:17 Action.
01:18 For the character of Devi,
01:20 it's really important of an episode
01:22 because she's finding out who she is in her own identity,
01:25 and where she stands with her culture.
01:27 You know, for a lot of South Asian youth,
01:30 it's hard to figure out
01:31 what makes you South Asian enough,
01:33 and I feel like Devi's trying to figure out where she belongs.
01:37 Some old loser was telling me that I'm too Indian,
01:39 and some other people think I'm not Indian enough.
01:42 And honestly, all I want to do is eat a doughnut,
01:44 but I'm stuck here.
01:46 I grew up Indian and Hindu
01:48 in a predominantly white community,
01:51 and I did not feel comfortable with my Hinduism,
01:53 because, you know, it's so overtly colorful,
01:56 and it's kind of inherently confident
01:58 even when I didn't feel confident,
01:59 and I think that the character of Devi, we wanted her to feel
02:03 the same way in these surroundings.
02:05 This sari is so uncomfortable.
02:07 Why does it itch so much?
02:08 Itchiness of saris is a rite of passage for Indian women.
02:11 Deal with it.
02:12 She's going through so much herself as a teenager,
02:15 and then to be put in this environment,
02:16 where there's other Indian people and Hindu people
02:17 who feel so much more comfortable with it,
02:19 is unnerving for her.
02:21 And so that's why it makes it
02:22 such a juicy event to see her at.
02:24 Good job. Up here.
02:26 Hell yeah.- advertisement spot 2020
