I was at Woodstock. 00:33 [man 2] You wouldn't be picked to be on the team back home. 00:36 But at Jened, you had to go up to bat. 00:39 Even when we were that young, we helped empower each other. 00:43 It was allowing us to recognize 00:45 that the status quo is not what it needed to be. 00:50 [woman 2] The world always wants us dead. 00:52 We live with that reality. 00:54 [man 1] At the time, so many kids just like me 00:56 were being sent to institutions. 00:59 It was just a continual struggle. 01:01 Most disabled people, like myself, are unable to use public transportation. 01:06 [man 1] We needed a civil rights law of our own. 01:09 ["Like a Ship" playing] 01:12 [reporter] A rehabilitation program has been vetoed by the president 01:15 because it was cost prohibitive. 01:17 [woman 3] We decided we were gonna have a demonstration. 01:19 [woman 4] You get the call to action. 01:20 "To the barricades!" 01:22 [reporter] A small army of the handicapped 01:24 have occupied this building for the past 11 days. 01:26 [man 1] So many people from Camp Jened found their way into the building. 01:29 [crowd chanting] 01:31 [woman 2] The FBI cut off the phones. 01:33 The deaf people went, "We know what to do." 01:35 That's how we communicated to the people outside the building. 01:38 The Black Panther Party would bring a hot meal. 01:40 We were like this. 01:41 [man over PA] We are the strongest political force in this country. 01:44 We will no longer allow the government to oppress disabled individuals. 01:48 And I would appreciate it if you would stop shaking your head in agreement 01:52 when I don't think you understand what we are talking about. 01:55 [crowd cheering] 01:58 [man 1] What we saw at that camp was that our lives could be better. 02:01 -[boy] Go! -[man 3] Go! 02:03 ["Like a Ship" continues playing] 02:06 [woman 5] If you don't demand what you believe in for yourself, 02:10 you're not gonna get it. 02:12 ♪ I sailed for pleasure ♪ 02:15 ♪ I sailed for pleasure ♪ 02:17 Would you like to see the handicapped people depicted as people? 02:22 Excuse me? 02:23 [laughter]- advertisement spot 2020
