Mercedes-Benz supports over 50 grassroots organizations who are positively impacting local neighborhoods, and is proud to call Atlanta home. 00:02 my name is Dean leaper and I'm the 00:04 executive director of the Kentucky 00:05 schools the word Condesa 00:08 means the art by which a community 00:11 holistically raises a child together I 00:14 mean it definitely comes from love and 00:17 and that was the essence of how I even 00:20 had this idea got a master's in 00:26 education it became a second grade 00:28 teacher and I taught actually really 00:30 close to here it was an intensely 00:32 concentrated poverty school I did start 00:35 to feel limited in the impact that I 00:38 could have on the kids and I just felt 00:41 viscerally like if I just had seven kids 00:43 I could have a bigger impact on each one 00:45 of these kids and I dreamed about it 00:47 eventually I just decided I was gonna 00:49 try it and and pilot this idea and see 00:52 if I was right 00:53 and they decided I was gonna homeschool 00:55 some kids from Atlanta public school 00:58 some of the toughest schools so I i 01:00 homeschooled them out of a church called 01:02 Georgia Avenue Church for a year and and 01:04 what I learned from that was it was 01:06 easier to form authentic human 01:08 connection with them and if you can do 01:10 that then there is a impact from from 01:12 small classes at that point I went and I 01:15 started trying to start this charter 01:17 school then of course everyone laughed 01:19 me out of the room I started writing 01:21 this this charter petition first it was 01:24 denied and then you know said why don't 01:27you rewrite it and then we were denied 01:29 again and so we kept on coming back and 01:32 in the third year it worked out and so 01:34 in 2010 we started a school it was here 01:37 on the west side it was called the kindy 01:39 school it had six students in every 01:41 class in their first three years we had 01:44 rapid growth in our test scores and then 01:47 we were up into like the 01:49 80th percentile for the nation by our 01:52 third and fourth year that rapid 01:54 increase in our test scores caught 01:56 attention they had some of the highest 01:58 growth in Georgia and we recalled a 02:00 reward school which means that we were 02:02 in the top 90th percent growth for title 02:04 1 schools we don't have just a 02:06 curriculum and we try to have teachers 02:10 empowered with resources that they can 02:12 use as curriculum but we want to think 02:15 of the teacher as the source of 02:17 curriculum which is a hard thing it's 02:19 much easier to just say here's your 02:20 script and you know use this but that 02:23 doesn't work for us the learning style 02:24 has to be customized the interests of 02:26 the students should be customized and 02:28 their actual profile of their background 02:31 we had one child he joined us in third 02:34 grade he also had trauma in his life but 02:36 he immediately connected with his 02:39 teacher and it was healthy and positive 02:41 and that connection allowed him to 02:44 become eventually one of our highest 02:46 performing students he's definitely 02:48 gonna go to college I feel really 02:49 confident about that and so it pays off 02:52 you know what we talk about is the 02:56 Beloved Community we talk about a whole 03:01 society that values all of its children 03:04 there should be no kid who has to go to 03:06 a school that I wouldn't send my I don't 03:08 get to we feel like Atlanta is moving in 03:12 a direction where we see all kids in 03:15 Atlanta as our kids 03:29 you 03:47 you 03:50 [Music]- advertisement spot 2020
