The best time of day to plant vegetables

When you start your first vegetable garden, take a moment to watch the sun move across your yard. Most vegetables need a full six hours of sunlight a day, so choose an open area without many trees around. If you live in an area with very hot summers, it is possible to operate your vegetable garden in the afternoon shade.

Most vegetables germinate well in daytime temperatures of 70°F (60°F at night). Depending on the type of vegetable, it needs up to 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Less light tends to make plants "leggy." Direct sunlight can supplement the light from grow lights (6-8 inches above the seedlings). Plants grown in slabs or trays can be transplanted into individual pots once they are ready to handle. Leave at least 2 inches between pots for good air circulation.

For the best harvest, your vegetable garden needs the best soil you can provide. When you feel rich, healthy soil, you feel it: It's easy to dig and drains well. Pick up a trowel's worth and place it in your hand. Does it feel rough? There is too much sand. Is it powdery? Too much silt. Will it be sticky when wet? Too many voices. The combination of these three types, and the specific ratios, will determine the texture of your garden soil. This texture affects drainage and nutrient availability.

Good vegetable-growing soil is well-drained and deep. It should contain adequate amounts of the major nutrients (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sulfur, and magnesium), have a pH of 6.0 to 6.8, and have an organic content of 5% or more. Achieving all of these conditions often requires soil amendments.
