VIDEO hulu Celebrate Black Stories: Inspiration TV commercial 2021 • 00:00 every black artist i've ever worked with 00:02 has mentored me in some 00:03 way shape or form the biggest mentor i 00:06 could point out 00:06 is my father who not only raised the 00:09 generation of 00:10 uh young black men from his work and his 00:12 art but when he wasn't busy doing that 00:14 he was busy imparting to me what it 00:16 means to be 00:17 a black man in america and this is 00:19 michelle obama 00:20 she supported my music and just me as a 00:22 person and brought me along 00:24 on the let girls learn campaign and i 00:25 just got to see the power and the 00:27 strength of a black woman going in and 00:29 making 00:29 waves of change a woman named victoria 00:32 alexander 00:33 she put out a book list for people who 00:35 wanted to learn 00:36 about anti-racism uh people who just 00:39 wanted to like hey if you have 00:40 white friends or non-black friends and 00:42 they're looking for books or 00:43 answers she's been doing incredible work 00:46 as an activist 00:46 the work of issa rae is just so 00:50 authentic and unapologetic she just 00:52 gives permission 00:53 for us to be ourselves and celebrate 00:56 life 00:57 just normalizing the millennial 01:00 awkward-ass 01:01 black experience a book by angela davis 01:03 called women race in class 01:05 she does such a thorough job at walking 01:07 you through the history of black women 01:09 specifically in america and how much 01:11 they've contributed to society 01:13 rizza has really inspired me in this 01:15 industry working with him or muting 01:16 american 01:17 saga has been exceptional sam anderson 01:19 and sharon couch 01:21 they're two individuals from my 01:22 childhood that 01:24 really invested in me a positive black 01:27 male role model 01:28 positive black woman role model they 01:31 instilled in me hard work 01:32 they always told me they believed in me 01:33 and i have carried that on through 01:35 adulthood 01:36 and in my career my brother luty ben 01:39 lay has a production company called 01:41 looty media and it's a black production 01:42 company and they made a show called max 01:44 you can watch it now on hulu he was an 01:46 example 01:47 of diversifying in front and behind the 01:48 camera definitely my mom 01:50 my mother and my aunt and my grandmother 01:53 my mother runs her own business my 01:55 father 01:55 went from being a gas meter reader in uh 01:58 seattle 01:59 to an executive here in new york city i 02:01 think we're in a really 02:02 interesting place where the idea of 02:06 mentorship 02:06 and elevating of voices is no longer 02:09 traditional i feel like we're doing that 02:11 for 02:12 each other actively on an equal plane i 02:15 think that's what's so beautiful about 02:16 it is you're seeing 02:17 filmmakers who are brand new mentoring 02:20 studio execs on how to tell stories 02:24 everyone knows about rosa parks but what 02:26 about claudette colvin 02:27 everyone knows about martha king but a 02:29 lot of people know a lot about john 02:30 lewis 02:31 or the fact that one in every four 02:33 cowboys was actually black black people 02:35 can go to space 02:36 yeah black people can fight dragons why 02:38 why do they always gotta be slaves for 02:40 some reason 02:40 doesn't make sense more black fantasy 02:42 more black 02:43 superheroes i want to see stories of 02:45 love of connection 02:47 of family i want trans black stories i 02:50 want 02:51 gay black stories i want more black 02:53 women stories 02:54 let's focus on sharing more stories 02:56 about black education the ones that 02:58 showcase the range of our humanity 03:00 that's the ups and the downs the highs 03:02 and the lows 03:02 and we'll get authenticity the more that 03:05 we get as many different people within 03:07 positions of power within this industry 03:09 as we possibly can and that's people 03:10 behind the camera 03:11 that's people writing the stories that's 03:13 people directing stories 03:14 that's people producing the stories 03:16 we're in this together every month is 03:18 black history month yeah 03:19 look out for your brothers and sisters- advertisement spot 2021
