How to find the perfect music venue. Where is the best place in the world to go record shopping? Are there aliens in New Mexico? 0:00 One of the best things about traveling for music is 0:02 I get to experience 0:02 all these different cultures and scenes. 0:06 Hey, I’m A-Trak. 0:07 I’m a DJ, producer, record label owner, 0:10 and I’ve been traveling for music for 25 years. 0:15 If you want to experience music 0:16 in a new way, seek out unique environments. 0:19 Some are man-made, of course, 0:20 but some are in nature. 0:22 There’s this place in Colorado 0:23 called the Red Rocks Amphitheatre 0:25 that is carved into these gorgeous rocks 0:29 and it has the best sound of any venue in America. 0:32 On the other end of the spectrum, 0:33 there’s a place in London called Drumsheds. 0:36 It’s a massive warehouse, 0:38 a classic signifier of rave culture. 0:40 It just kind of encourages me 0:42 to travel the world and 0:43 find spaces that inspire me. 0:47 If you want to go deep in record shopping, 0:48 you’ve got to go to Brazil. 0:50 Everyone knows about São Paulo and Rio, 0:52 but if you go to Bahia you can experience 0:54 the Afro-Brazilian culture, which is amazing. 0:57 There’s things that you can find 0:58 that might seem kind of familiar, 1:00 like soul, funk and jazz records 1:01 from the sixties and seventies, 1:03 but they’ll have their musicians’ take on it. 1:05 Then of course, bossa nova 1:07 and some of their local sounds. 1:08 I have many DJ friends 1:10 who thought they were going for three or four days, 1:12 and once they’re there, they’re like, 1:13 I’m staying. 1:14 Make sure you book a trip 1:16 that’s longer than you think you need. 1:19 When you’re traveling for a festival, 1:21 it’s quite likely that you're going 1:22 to run into some fatigue. 1:24 My tip is to treat your body like a race car. 1:26 You’re paying extra attention 1:27 to the quality of the fuel that you put in. 1:30 When you first get to the destination avoid the nap. 1:33 If you nap, you’re screwed. 1:35 You want to get some sunlight on your face 1:37 that first day. 1:38 That sets your circadian clock. 1:40 So learn to master that tune-up routine. 1:44 You could go to these new high-tech spots 1:46 like the Sphere in Las Vegas. 1:48 Me personally, I’m a fan of places like Meow Wolf 1:51 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 1:53 It’s this art space slash music space. 1:56 It’s owned by a bunch of artists in Santa Fe. 2:00 It’s just one more reason to love New Mexico, 2:02 which has this really unique 2:04 mix of American art, Native American art, 2:07 incredible landscapes, the most beautiful sunsets 2:09 and aliens I’m pretty sure. 2:11 I remember when I first went there, I was like, 2:13 how did I not know about this place?
