VIDEO Dior Savoir-faire from the Vermont Atelier for the Dior Autumn-Winter 2019-2020 Haute Couture collection TV commercial 2019 • For her Autumn-Winter 2019-2020 Haute Couture collection, Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri commissioned the Vermont Atelier to revive an ancient technique of ribbon embroidery for the 13th silhouette of her latest couture collection, with a mighty 3,600 meters of length used in total! Learn more about the incredible savoir-faire that went into its making in this video. 00:04 Maria Grazia Chiuri has used traditional techniques. 00:07 This is ribbon embroidery. 00:09 So, it’s an asymmetric dress, 00:11 with a strap on the left which will be joined to 00:13 the skirt, with a more rigid structure, like a crinoline. 00:18 So, on the dress there are three sizes of ribbons 00:21 which are used for the woven net, 00:24 for this more open net and for the fringing. 00:27 As you can see, 00:28 the pompoms are made with the larger ribbons. 00:31 This part of the skirt is a to-ing and fro-ing of ribbons. 00:34 The ribbon is folded, it goes in the other direction. 00:37 It’s knotted, then it goes in the other direction, which makes it form waves. 00:41 Each ribbon is thread 00:44 and there's a French knot added in ribbon, 00:46 which gives a finishing touch to this dress. 00:49 Now we’re working with a braid 00:50 which is turned and appliquéd and silk threads. 00:53 The pompom ball is a wooden ball 00:56 that’s completely covered in the same ribbon. 00:59 Ribbon fringing emerges from these balls. 01:06 For this dress, we used about 3500 metres of ribbon. - advertisement spot 2019
