This 6-year-old is nearly completely blind and deaf due to severe neglect. Her previous owners sat back while their other dog attacked her, causing scarring all over her wrinkly face. Now, she is so terrified of humans that she ducks and cowers when anyone tries to touch her. Without help, this sweet, young girl may never be able to see, hear, or trust again. Mercy's condition is one of the worst we've ever seen. When volunteers went to pick her up, they literally started crying. Vets said she was a “walking disaster”. This girl, who is only 6 years old, has suffered such severe neglect that she is at risk of becoming permanently blind and deaf. She will, at minimum, need a $600 surgery to clear her completely blocked ear canals, and another costly surgery to correct her severe eye condition. Her horrific life experiences have led her to be terrified of everything from the human touch to telephones. The tale of pain she has endured is horrific. Mercy was surrendered to us by owners who had stopped giving her medical care because they could no longer afford it. English Bulldogs like Mercy are not often naturally healthy, and by halting her medical care, Mercy was sent into a spiral of deep physical pain. Vets believe that it has, in fact, been years since her ears were cared for. Right now, the ear canals are infected to the point that they have completely closed and calcified. In order to correct this severe infection, the only remaining option is to give the surgery that would completely remove the infected ear canal, thus restoring a tiny bit of her hearing, alleviating her pain, and giving her a much better quality of life. She will need this on both ears. Although her hearing will be significantly less than a dog who has never endured this level of neglect, she may at least be able to hear her foster humans tell her what a good girl she is for the very first time. Currently, Mercy is also for all intents and purposes, blind. She has such severe entropion that she can hardly see. No doubt, this makes her even more fearful of her surroundings. Entropion in dogs occurs when their eyelids have folded over and their eyelashes grow towards their eyeballs. The eyelashes and any itching by the dog can cause irritation and scraping of the cornea. Mercy's condition is so bad that it will require surgery to correct. Although costly, we know that this terrified little angel deserves the best possible care. As if her ears and eyes weren't bad enough, Mercy has also been subjected to physical abuse throughout her whole life. After looking through her records we realized that she has already had multiple litters of puppies. This strongly suggests that Mercy was a means of profit who was important enough to exploit for valuable puppies, but not enough to pay for simple medical care. Her belly and nipples are saggy from the burdens she was forced to bear. Furthermore, she was subjected to multiple dog attacks by the other dog in her household, and not provided medical care to address her wounds. Her face is covered in oozing scars from the bites inflicted by her former dog roommate. This tired, terrified girl is clearly in so much pain. Pus is oozing out of her ears, eyes, and each and every scar on her beautiful face. She cowers when anyone tries to go near her. She is terrified of putting on her harness to go outside. She's even frightened of the sound of phones ringing, which despite how faint it must sound through her completely blocked ears, is enough to send her into such an immense panic that she can hardly breathe. The mental toll that led Mercy to this dark place is truly unfathomable. The despicable neglect that she has been forced to endure has left her broken in so many ways. She needs the help and compassion she has been denied for so long. Mercy needs so much. In addition to her costly ear and eye surgeries, she will need to be spayed, and given the basic medication that she has been denied for so long. She deserves creature comforts to make her finally feel that she is safe and loved: a soft bed to keep her comfortable, health to help her heal from the inside out, and most of all, Mercy needs love and patience. We believe with every fiber of our being that she can learn that humans are not there to exploit and mistreat her, but rather to care for her and love her.
