Subscribe to the Maison’s channel https://bit.ly/CartierYoutube Follow Cartier Instagram: https://bit.ly/CartierInstagram Tiktok: https://bit.ly/CartierTiktok Threads: https://bit.ly/CartierThreads Facebook: https://bit.ly/CartierFacebook LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/CartierLinkedin Pinterest: https://bit.ly/CartierPinterest 0:10 I’ve always loved Italy, 0:13 and of course, this is a special area of Italy 0:16 that was so saturated with Eastern culture. 0:20 That mixed with the Italian sensibility 0:23 is so extraordinary. 0:25 You make a film and people think, well, it’s the director. 0:27 Well, sort of, then it’s sort of the writer, 0:31 it’s sort of the actors, it’s sort of the composer, 0:34 it’s sort of the editor, it’s a team effort. 0:37 It is a collaboration. 0:38 We tell stories and, basically, 0:41 an editor tells stories from his angle, 0:43 an actor does from his angle. 0:45 But I think we all have to have a central vision. 0:49 Néstor Almendros, certainly one of the greatest of DPs, cinematographers, 0:53 and he was well known for using natural light. 0:56 We had a crew that was more of a Hollywood crew, 0:59 and they were used to lighting a lot, 1:03 and filling in spaces. 1:05 I always liked things to go black, 1:08 certain areas of the frame to be black. 1:10 And he did too. 1:11 Néstor was very painterly, very almost Vermeer-like 1:16 with his use of light and shadow. 1:18 So, it was an opening experience for this Hollywood crew, 1:22 how you could shoot with no extra light at all. 1:26 And the natural beauty of that, when we are on location 1:29 and some extraordinary things happen. 1:31 “So quick, let’s shoot!” 1:33 but this is happening now, by the time we try to make this happen, 1:37 it’s not going to feel the same. 1:38 There’s a moment now we can capture. 1:41 We play. All of us play. 1:45 We play in real life, and we play in movies. 1:48 There’s nothing objective really about music, 1:50 it’s purely subjective and can influence the same way editing does. 1:55 Music can help with the process of focusing on all those possibilities, 2:01 that this is the one we would like to track. 2:05 It’s a miracle anything works, 2:08 that a movie actually works is a miracle. 2:10 A computer can’t do it. 2:14 It takes human beings who make mistakes, 2:17 who have to fix a mistake, and fixing a mistake can find something extraordinary. 2:22 That’s basically it, acting is the same right? 2:24 Some memory comes up out of nowhere, 2:26 and the person you’re working with reacts to that 2:30 and it’s back and forth. 2:31 It’s in the being alive, to the thoughts and the emotions, 2:37 that makes storytelling riveting for two hours.
