H.264 has long been 00:40 a mainstay in digital video. It uses intraframe compression, 00:44 which analyzes the portions of the image that are moving versus 00:47 the static portions, compressing the static, repetitive portions 00:50 of each frame. H.264 allows you to record 4K, 8-Bit video that 00:56 is easily ingestible in most NLE platforms. It is a great way to 01:00 share video, especially if you are comfortable with in-camera 01:03 settings such as Picture Style, and want video to be ready 01:06 without significant editing in post. H.264 is automatically 01:11 applied, any time Canon Log is not active. 01:14 H.265, also known as HEVC or High Efficiency Video Coding, is the next evolution of 01:20 image compression. HEVC does a similar job of analyzing the 01:24 static and moving parts of the image as H.264 does, but with 01:28 increased efficiency in compression. 01:30 HEVC is activated on the 1D X Mark III by simply switching on Canon Log. 01:36 With H.265, there are two ways of decoding video during editing. 01:41 One is through software based decoding, which relies on your 01:43 computer's CPU to decode the complex compression algorithms. 01:48 Or hardware-based decoding, with a powerful graphics card, will 01:51 provide a smoother playback experience.
