When you find that Instagram notifications haven't reached your device, you risk missing out on important updates to your account. The problem is usually due to one of the following reasons: incorrect permission settings, a software glitch or malfunction, or alternatively, features that limit interruptions like Do Not Disturb, Airplane Mode, and Instagram's own Sleep mode.
What do you do when the red notification icon shows a number but no notifications appear?
1. Allow Instagram app notifications
When you can't receive any of your Instagram notifications on your device, the first step is naturally to check the app's notification settings. Instagram push notifications may not be allowed on your device in the first place.
Since Instagram always asks for user consent when the app is first installed, it's possible that the user didn't accept the message dialog. To enable push notifications on your device:
Check if notifications are paused from within the app.
- Open the Instagram app and tap on your profile icon at the bottom right.
- Tap the three-horizontal-line menu icon at the top right of the screen.
- Select Settings > Notifications.
- In the list of notifications, tap the ones you want to receive on your device.
2. Check if Airplane mode or Do Not Disturb is enabled
First of all, when Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode is active, your phone stops virtually all incoming notifications. In DND, all your notifications are silenced; there is no noise or vibration but they remain visible. In airplane mode, the phone is disconnected from all networks and therefore there is no notification reception to begin with.
If DND mode is on, Instagram notifications are silenced.
To resolve this issue, make sure that Airplane mode and DND mode are turned off on your device, and this can be done by the phone settings.
3. Disable Battery Saver Mode
On most mobile devices, Battery Saver mode is automatically enabled once the charge level drops below a certain level. The user is likely to be unaware of this and during this time period, miss important notifications. It is true that Battery Saver Mode does not “block” notifications per se; however, they will mute them in most cases.
Make sure that Battery Saver Mode is disabled so that notifications beep or vibrate.
4. Check Your Internet Connection
Sometimes, even if you are connected to a network, you may not get active internet response. That means that notifications on your Instagram account and app are likely not showing up on your device or at all. In such cases, there is no problem with any of the notification settings and it is quite difficult to diagnose, especially when using some specific data plan.
Use an internet speed test to check if you have an active internet response.
Make sure that the app in question is active and running on your current connection. If you are using mobile data, make sure that your ISP does not throttle Instagram. For more details, it is recommended that you contact your respective data provider.
5. Check if sleep mode is enabled on Instagram
Instagram has its own “sleep mode,” designed to help users take a break from the app. It silences notifications and automatically responds to direct messages. When it’s on, you likely won’t receive any notifications on your account.
Turn off sleep mode, if it’s enabled on your account.
To check if sleep mode is enabled on your account:
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture at the bottom right of the screen.
- Tap the three-horizontal-line menu icon at the top right. Tap Settings > Time Management > Sleep Mode.
- Toggle sleep mode on or off.
6. Restart your device
It’s possible that a bug or software glitch is causing the problem. This can be especially identified if, in addition to Instagram, notifications from all other apps aren’t being sent as well. A simple restart can resolve issues that would otherwise be difficult to explain.
A simple restart can clear up any bugs or glitches. Turn your device off, then back on, reconnect to any wireless network, and check if the problem persists.
7. Update the Instagram app
If all else fails, make sure you have the latest version of the app.n.ion, older versions may stop working properly, resulting in a poor experience. If you have any issues with the way newer versions take up more space or use more internet, you can always opt for the stripped-down version of Instagram Lite.
You can update the Instagram app through the Google Play Store.
8. Check if you're logged into the right account
Sometimes, it may appear that you're logged into a certain account, perhaps one that has a lot of activity, only to find that the Instagram app has a different account logged in. This would mean that you won't receive notifications from the account that's logged out. Simply open the app and check the account in question is the same one that's logged in.
