Read on to learn How to install and use iSCSI Target to configure Storage Server, because today we are going to cover all that you need to know.

The iSCSI target will easily configure a storage server operating on a network. It allows access to and utilization of storage by devices over a TCP/IP network. Continue reading to the end of the post as we will be walking you through how to install and then configure an iSCSI Target on the storage server.

Installation and Setup of iSCSI Initiator

Now we start this tutorial right away.

Step 1-iSCSI Target Server Installation

The role of iSCSI Target Server is enabled on default in Windows Servers. To enable this role, we can set up the Windows server as a storage provider with all controls centralized. Let's get started.

Click the Next button at the opening of Server Manage, click the Manage menu option and click the Add Roles and Features option.

When the following screen pops up select role-based or feature-based installation and click on Next.

Choose any of the servers from the server pool where the iSCSI Target will be installed to advance further. Click Next after choosing.

In the Select Server Roles section, check the box beside File and iSCSI Services. Under it, select the iSCSI Target Server option and click the Next button.

If you want to install everything, inside the Feature window just click Next. Once done, click the Close button.

You can proceed with the next step once the installation is complete.

Step 2: Configure the iSCSI Target System

Now that the feature has been installed, this is the time to actually configure the setting of the iSCSI Target Server. Now we can set up a server that uses the iSCSI protocol to provide block-level storage over a network. The iSCSI Target server can be configured by following the steps stated below.

To begin with, choose a directory or disk and create the iSCSI target folder within it.

First-to start working with the iSCSI feature-open the Server Manager and on the dashboard click on File and Storage Services.

Click the link that says "To Create an iSCSI virtual disk, start the New iSCSI Virtual Disk Wizard" to create an iSCSI VHD. Alternatively, do the same from within the same window by expanding the Tasks menu and selecting New iSCSI Virtual Disk.

Open the following dialog to access the folder that we created earlier by selecting Select by volume and then click Type a custom path.

Click Next after typing the text, naming and then a description.

Now, depending on your needs, one of the three available storage management and allocation methods is to be selected. Then, type in the size of the iSCSI virtual disk.

Click New iSCSI Target. It opens a window, and in this way, the configuration of the iSCSI Target will be continued.

In the Targets page, fill in the name and the description of the target, click Next, then click Add. In the Add Initiators ID window, select the type followed by entering a value for the type.

To add the IP address of the initiator, click the Type drop-down selection and click Ok.

This is necessary to set up CHAP between the iSCSI initiators and targets for an added layer of security. After making your selection, click the Next button.

Before exiting the Wizard, make sure you have clicked the Finish button after verifying that your configuration.

Now, at this stage, the target is ready and the iSCSI virtual disk is about to be created.

End

The configuration of Client - iSCSI Initiator - is after the configuration of server iSCSI target. Once an iSCSI Initiator has connected to an iSCSI Target, then the client can access its storage resources.

The following are the steps to configure iSCSI initiator.

Open Server Manager. On the Tools bar, click iSCSI Initiator. If prompted, click Yes.

To find an iSCSI target server, open the iSCSI Initiator Properties window, select the Targets tab, then enter in the IP address of the server. Click the Quick Connect button.

Once a target has been found, highlight it and click the Connect button.

Click the Advanced menu, click CHAP, and then fill in the required credentials to proceed to the next step, which is to set the authentication.

Click OK and then Enter to close the connection window.

After that, it will connect and display the iSCSI drive in drive Management. It would show offline and uninitialized, but you can set that to online by right-clicking it.

After that, double-click on it and click on Initialize Disk again.

Right-click on the empty area of the newly appeared disk and select New Simple Volume for assigning a drive letter, formatting the volume, and naming the volume with step-by-step guidelines from New Simple Volume Wizard.

That is all you need to know about How to install and use iSCSI Target to configure Storage Server, so we hope we were as useful as possible.
