In order to get back to the letter-type typing, you need to turn off Num Lock. Most laptops have this common feature of toggling between the number pad and the letter pad by just turning the Num Lock on and off.

It's just as easy to turn it off by hitting the Num Lock key. It will even let you know that it's done with a little light on top, often next to the key or on top of the laptop.

In some keyboards, holding down the fn key or a key combination like the shift with num lock may serve to disable the num lock.

2. Use the onscreen keyboard in Windows to disable Num lock

If you are experiencing issues where you are not able to turn off Num Lock on your physical keyboard, understand that you can do it from the Windows on-screen keyboard. In case the problem is within the `typing isn't functioning too well`, the Num Lock can be toggled on this virtual keyboard to let letters come into action. It also works like a normal keyboard in its functionality aspect.

To open the Run dialog box, use the Windows or Start key + R. 

osk - In the text field, type in "osk" and click on the "Enter" key. 

The numeric keypad will turn white when numeric lock is on. Turn off numeric keypad.

In the "Options" check  "Num Lock" and click 'OK'. Now "Num Lock" should appear; turn it off.

3. Disable Num lock using an external keyboard

Try unplugging and using an external keyboard if this doesn't work. You don't have to try and find the right combination on your laptop if you have an main external keyboard that has a Num Lock key; you can turn off Num Lock by using that key.

Stay seated while installing.

Once the num lock feature on the main keyboard is enabled, an on light for num lock will light up on the external keyboard.

To disable Num Lock, press the Num Lock key on the external keyboard. 

Also, the light of the num lock of your laptop key will be turned off too. 

Pull out the cable of the external keyboard.
