Today in our article we show you How to install SQL Server Management Studio on Windows 11
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is a convenient interface to operate with a SQL Server database. Below, we are going to explain the process of installing SSMS and connecting it with any SQL Server instance.
Install and configure SQL Server Management Studio on Windows 11
Following is the installation and configuration process for SSMS:
Download SSMS: Download the latest setup for SSMS from the Microsoft Download Center.
Install SSMS: Run the downloaded SSMS setup file. Then follow the on-screen instructions.
SQL Server Installation : In case you are not already running a SQL Server instance, download and install an appropriate edition from Microsoft.
Connect to the SQL Server: Launch the SSMS and connect to your SQL Server instance using the Object Explorer. You will need the server name, the instance name, and the authentication credentials.
The overall explanation for each of these steps in detail will follow in subsequent sections.
1] Download SQL Server Management Studio
First, download the latest version of SSMS. Go to the Microsoft Download Center: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssms/download-sql-server-management-studio-ssms?view=sql-server-ver16 Scroll down to the section that says "Download SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)" and click on the correct download link for your system. Your browser will begin downloading an executable file you can use to install SSMS.
2] Install SSMS
Install SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS):
Run the Installer: Double-click the downloaded SSMS executable file.
Review the Installation Options: Check and, if necessary, change the installation path or select to use the default location.
Start Installation: Click "Install" to start the installation process.
Confirm UAC Prompt: If User Account Control pops up, click "Yes" to continue with the installation.
Complete the Installation: Wait for the setup to finish.
Restart Your System: Once installed, restart your system for changes to take effect.
3] SQL Server - Download and install
This step is optional but useful when working on local projects or when a testing environment is desired. To download and install a local SQL Server instance:
Download SQL Server: Go to the Microsoft Download Center and click on the preferred edition. For this tutorial, we will use the Express edition.
Click "Download" to initiate.
Run the Installer: Double click on the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
User Account Control Prompt: Click "Yes" to allow the installation to proceed.
Select Installation Type: Select "Basic installation" unless you have experience with the advanced settings.
Terms and Conditions: Read through the terms and click "Accept."
Installation Location Optional: If needed, select a location that will accommodate the files created by the installation.
Installation Start: Click "Install" to begin the installation process.
Verify Installation Optional: Once installed, you can click "Connect Now" to open a Command Prompt screen displaying the version of SQL Server installed.
This confirms that it installed correctly.
4] Connect to SQL Server
Open the SSMS: Open SQL Server Management Studio from your Start menu.
Connect to Server: The fields in the Connect to Server dialog are likely auto-populated. Verify the information and click "Connect."
Access databases and make queries: Once connected, you can list all the available databases, create a new one, and execute SQL queries using Object Explorer and Query Editor in SSMS.
5] Solve Connection Error
Solution of Certificate Chain Errors:
If you get "The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted" trying to connect to an instance of SQL Server, this simply means that the server is set to require validation of a certificate for each incoming connection. To avoid this, do the following:
Open Connection Properties: Open SSMS, right-click on the server connection, and click "Properties."
Disable Certificate Verification: Under the "Connection" tab, select "Optional." for "Encrypt connection".
Reconnect: Click "OK" and reconnect to the server.
Note: Disabling certificate verification reduces security. This option is done so at one's own risk. Any production environment is advised to deal with the certificate trust issue for maintaining an encrypted secure connection.
The following steps should resolve the certificate chain error to connect to the SQL Server instance.
