To use Google Earth for measuring distances, follow the steps below:

Locate Ruler Tool: Find the icon of the ruler in the toolbar above or right-click on your mouse to open the option.

Add Additional Points: If it were a longer route, much more complex, then click additional points along the route.

The measurement will appear either in the ruler tool or in a separate window for the measurement.

How to Take a Measurement Using Google Earth in Browser

Measure Distances and Areas with Google Earth in Your Browser:

With Google Earth, you can measure anything from distances to areas with tools right in your web browser. Whether you are planning a trip, analyzing geographic data, or simply interested in learning more about the world around you, these tools are an easy and convenient way to get what you need.

How to Measure Distance:

Open Google Earth Web: Open earth.google.com in a compatible web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Accessing Ruler Tool: Access the ruler tool by using one of the following methods:

From the Menu Bar if visible, click on Tools > Measurement.

Use Ctrl+Shift+M keys

Set the starting point at which you want your distance measurement by clicking in the map.

Give the endpoint by simply placing your cursor over where you want it and click to place it.

Click to view the measurement results. A yellow line will show, between your measurement points, and a "Measurement" pop-up box will appear showing a calculated distance in whatever unit of measurement it thinks best (it defaults to kilometres for long distances, but this may not be what you want).

Using the pop-up menu, within the units of measurement, you can use options to change to: kilometer, inches, feet, etc, depending on your needs.

Measuring Areas:

Google Earth enables you to measure areas as well as linear distances. To do so:

Active the Ruler Tool: Proceed with step 1 and 2 above.

Perimeter: Double click several times around an area you wish to get the perimeter of. Double click on your last point to close out the area and have it calculate.

The "Measurement" pop-up will refresh showing your calculated area in the selected unit of your choice.

Advanced Options:

Adding Points to Distance Measurements: To make distance measurements more flexible, drag the white circle on the yellow line to add additional points to your route.

Saving Measurements for Later Use: To save your measurements in order to reuse them later in another session, click the "Save to project" button in the "Measurement" pop-up. You have two options:

Google Drive: Keep your data stored persistently and share it by creating a link; click it.

Local KML File: Download a local copy that will get erased when you clean up your browser.

Note: The local KML files are temporary and will not last through the cleaning of browser data. Google Drive offers the added value of permanency and sharing as part of collaboration on measurements.

The above steps, plus the other options which you can go through, help in the application of the measurement tools available on the web-based platform of Google Earth in effectively mapping distances, calculating areas, and providing useful insight into geographical locations.
