Unarmed in Fallout London? Learn who your early enemies are, and where to find your first melee weapon. We will also show you how to get a free Balisong knife.

Using fists in combat

As players emerge from the escape pod at the very start of the Broken Angel quest, they'll find themselves in a cold, bleak, and weaponless environment. There's no option for melee or ranged combat in this laboratory, so survivors are forced to rely entirely upon their fists. Equipped only with a small amount of ammunition, the early encounters against the laboratory's oversized Radshrews and Radroaches force players to develop at least the basics of unarmed combat. Although VATS can be useful here, using it is not strictly necessary to overcome these early, relatively weak enemies. Each defeated mutant provides valuable experience points, but players always have the option to retreat and regroup.

First melee weapon

Work through the first quest until eventually you find your way onto the tunnel leading into London Bridge Station. As you come into this tunnel, head down toward the section with the ticket gates. From that vantage, as you will see from the second screenshot below, you will find a harrowing scene: the skeleton of an old man slumped over on a bench. This grim discovery is joined by a more practical one; a Walking Cane lies next to the skeleton, providing your character with their first viable melee weapon. Since this cane does 17 points of damage, you'll undoubtedly want to equip this cane as your default weapon in your Pip-Boy right away. This will give you a valuable tool for your future endeavors.

Free Balisong knife

Complete the quest "On the Mend" and find yourself above ground, living to your fullest potential. The open world of London will be doing a lot more for you than providing you with beautiful vistas; it is full of opportunities for the expansion of your combat repertoire. Explore deeper in mystery, and expect to run into a greater variety in melee weapons and firearms attuned to your playstyle.

You will get to know the denizens of the city, including one character named Sebastian Gaunt. He will provide you with the Balisong knife, a quick and agile weapon whatever way your conversation will go. This blade serves quite an okay damage output of 16 points in the beginning for your journey.

First firearm - Thameshaven

You start off in this world unarmed. Indeed, the early stages of the game are biased toward melee combat, since you meet enemies who will not immediately break out firearms on you. This simplicity, however, is only a sop to the more challenging stuff ahead.

There is, however, a turning point arrived during the Charybdis main quest. Progressing through the southern entrance into Thameshaven will lead you down a corridor decorated with hanging cans, which then takes you to a room containing a Flare Gun and its ever-so useful flares. As much as this tool is extremely useful for navigation purposes, due to its poor offensive skills, it's not that different in combat from a knife, so still somewhat of a utility item at this point.

As you proceed with the quest, you will come across saving the Ferryman. Having just saved him from his precarious situation, you will find a large chest in the surroundings of the area, shown in Picture 1. Inside the treasure chest will be a Suppressed Converted Crude Rifle. This is an efficient long-range rifle that can unleash substantial damage. Its actual potency is, however, pegged on the availability of .303 ammunition, which happens to be a rather scanty resource. Therefore, this gun is most effective against the more powerful enemies.

By completion of the Charybdis quest, you can access Thameshaven Market and proceed to enter a weapons shop owned by Ahab Herringway. He will have all manners of equipment you can use in battle, from melee weapons to firearms and ammo, explosives, Molotov cocktails, and other tossable ordnance. Be warned that prices are steep for what Ahab has in stock. This will keep you from running out of resources in the middle of the game. Instead, play through using the given equipment until you gather enough useful loot and Tickets. Spending smartly will go a long way in maximizing your arsenal as you face more obstacles in the game.

Initial gun - Swan & Miter

Swan & Miter is the stronghold of Vagabonds and can provide valuable loot. This area opens after the completion of one of two quests available since the in-game prologue. It is a fighting ground between Vagabonds and their rival Isle of Dogs Syndicate. You will help Vagabonds defeat the Syndicate and collect rewards. Once it cools down, remember to clean up the dead bodies for goodies of the Syndicate members. Some of the potential loot includes a .32 Pistol that delivers 13 damage points and an improved Short Double-Barrel Shotgun capable of providing 45 damage points. Both are utility weapons as the type of ammunition they use is plentiful, providing you with a full run without the threat of depletion.

This place not only presents an exciting fight but is also a very lucrative possibility for improving your weapons arsenal.

This concludes our guide on How to get your first weapon in Fallout London, which hopefully has been as helpful as possible.
