The princess bride is special. It's well designed, well directed, and well acted. Rob Reiner is really a very good director, he has directed such films as Stand By Me. The film itself is beautiful, with beautiful sets and costumes, and a hilariously touching script, not to mention quotes. The story is simple but well developed with some surprises here and there. As for the acting, it's great. Cary Elwes is a charismatic protagonist as Westley, while Robin Wright's Buttercup comes alive. Chris Sarandon is kind of annoying, but he has some wonderful one-off lines that make you warm to him, especially when Westley finally insults him. Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, and Christopher Guest (whose lookalike to Tim Curry's Cardinal Richelieu) are also excellent, as is an unrecognizable Billy Crystal. Mandy Patinkin is excellent as the man who avenges his father's death by killing his six-fingered murderer. But what stuck with me the most was the fun break with the grandfather (played by Colombo's Peter Falk) and his sick grandson (Fred Savage).
