About Hulu

Hulu is a website that offers free, advertising-supported, streaming TV shows and movies from NBC, FOX, and many other networks and studios. Currently only offered to users in the United States.

Hulu offers videos in Flash Video format at a higher resolution than YouTube, but lower than the standard definition television, although many movies and other shows are available in 480p. Hulu also offers web services from other websites, including AOL, MSN, MySpace, Yahoo !, and Comcast's Fancast.com.

The name Hulu comes from two Mandarin Chinese words, hulu (葫芦/葫蘆), "calabash; bottle gourd", and hulu (互录/互錄), "interactive recording". The company blog explains:

In Mandarin, Hulu has two interesting meanings, each highly relevant to our mission. The primary meaning interested us because it is used in an ancient Chinese proverb describing the Hulu as possessor of precious things. It literally translates to "pumpkin", and in ancient times, the Hulu was emptied and used to hold precious things. The secondary meaning is "interactive recording". We saw both definitions as appropriate fasteners and very relevant to the Hulu mission.

Among the main instrumental executives of the Hulu Foundation are Bruce Campbell, Peter Chernin, JB Perrette, Michael Lang, Beth Comstock and Jason Kilar. The company was announced in March 2006 with AOL, Comcast, Facebook, MSN, Myspace and Yahoo! As "initial distribution partners". Kilar was appointed CEO in June 2006.

The name of Hulu was chosen in late August 2007, when the website was launched, with a unique advertisement and without content. He invited users to leave their email addresses for the next beta test. In October, Hulu started the private beta test by invitation, and later allowed users to invite friends. Hulu launched for public access in the United States on March 12, 2008. The first product to be launched was the HULU syndication network, which was designed and developed by the NBC Universal team of New York on October 29 Of 2007, followed by the Hulu .com destinations site.
