Beavers are bigger than you think. They can grow up to a metre long and weigh 30kg, so bringing them back to live wild in the English countryside is no small task. These rodents were hunted to extinction in Britain in the 16th century, by people who killed them for their fur, meat and scent-glands. Some survived in remote parts of Europe and by the beginning of this century, a few were released - both legally and illegally, in Scotland. These Eurasian beavers - which are slightly different to North American beavers, thrived and in 2020 the National Trust brought a pair to live in a very large enclosure at Holnicote in Somerset. Since then we've also brought beavers to live in enclosed areas in Northumberland and Sussex. We've monitored these sites closely and seen how the beavers have benefited the nature around them by building dams. This prevents the land from drying out during droughts and holds back floodwater during wet spells, protecting homes and farmland downstream. After five years of studying the impact of the beavers on our estates and on other wildlife, we were ready to go wild. As soon as it became legal, we released four beavers, brought from Scotland, into wet woodland on the Purbeck Heaths nature reserve at Studland in Dorset, where we hope they will live happily for years to come. Find out more about our beavers in this video presented by Ranger Rosie Holdsworth.
