BACKPACK:
• Backpack: Osprey Talon 44L - This is a very versatile backpack. Not too big but not too small so can be used in so many different scenarios. Really good if you just want one bag!
• Backpack Cover: Osprey Ultralight Raincover (m)
SLEEPING:
• Tent: MSR Hubba Hubba NX (1.76kg): This is a great 2-person tent that will serve you well in many situations. I used this for my 36-day Hayduke hike in Utah. If there are 2 of you then you can split the weight. If it is raining, I put it in a 13L Sea to Summit 70D dry bag to ensure it stays dry.
• Sleeping Mat: Thermarest Neoair XLite (350g) – I have used a number of sleeping mats and this is the one I get the best results from. I found the Thermarest Uberlite wasn’t rugged enough. Tenacious tape is great for repairs!
• Sleeping Bag: Mountain Equipment Helium 400 (820g)- Great 3-season sleeping bag with a comfort rating of 0 degrees
• Sleeping Bag Liner: Sea to Summit Reactor Thermolite Liner (248g) – For winter camping I use this sleeping bag liner to add a little extra warmth. In the summer I use a Blue Mountain Polycotton liner (375g). I also use liners to keep my sleeping bags clean
• Pillow: Sea to Summit Aeros Pillow (114g)- I am new to the pillow. Normally I just use clothes in a dry bag but this is a nice luxury!
• Lantern: Black Diamond Remoji Lantern (86g)- I prefer hanging this from the top of my tent than using a headtorch
CAMP KITCHEN:
• Stove: Jetboil Stash (200g)- Enjoying this stove at the moment but I am still undecided which is better, this or the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 Stove Set (259g), which I love!
• Gas: Gas Cartridge 110g (fits inside both stove options)
• Spork: Sea to Summit Long Handle Spoon (12g) – Just upgraded my spork situation to this as easier to eat from the Firepot pouches!
• Bowl: Sea to Summit X bowl (650ml) (80g) – This is a luxury but lightweight, compact and great for porridge!
• Breakfast: Quaker big bowl oats – Quick and easy breakfast
• Lunch: pre-prepared sandwich
• Evening meal: Firepot dehydrated meals – So far, the most delicious and nutritionally sound dehydrated meals I have tasted. have eaten these on lots of my adventures and always have a back-up one in my bag
• Preferred snacks: Ember Biltong, Chia Charge, Snickers
• Selection of tea + coffee in ziplock bag (enjoying Mission tea at the moment)
HYDRATION:
• Water Storage: Hydrapak Seeker 3L (93g) – Discovered this brand in the USA while doing my Hayduke Hike. The Seeker 3L is perfect to have stashed in your backpack and then filled when you nearer your camp spot. It has loops so you can attach to your backpack with carabiners.
• Water Filter: Sawyer Mini Filter (65g) – Have used this filter the most. Small and does the job. It comes with a bag but it isn’t very durable. I use the Hydrpak Stow 1L or 500ML.
• Bag for Water Filter: Hydrapak Stow 1L (57g) – Perfect to use with the Sawyer Filter. When you need to filter water it is important to have a designated pre filtered water bag to avoid any cross contamination.
• Mug: Lifeventure Thermal Mug (300g) – In the colder months I use this as my mug – great to fill with warm herbal tea in the morning. In the summer I would probably use an enamel mug.
• Water Bottle: Nalgene Wide Mouth Sustain 1L Water Bottle (177g) – Great water bottle that is durable and can be filled with hot water so can be used as a hot water bottle on colder days!
• Electrolytes – I use Hydralyte sachets – If you are out all day it is essential to take some electrolytes. The sachets are better than the tubes because the tablets can breakup!
OTHER:
• Loo paper in a ziplock bag
• Headtorch – Petzl Actik Core 600L Rechargeable (88g) – Great little headtorch with good brightness and the rechargeable battery means you don’t have to carry batteries!
• Dry bags – Selection of Sea to Summit 70D dry bags – I always use dry bags, especially when it is wet. Normally have at least one for clothes, one for food, one for sleeping bag, one for tent, one for electricals. Keeps stuff dry but also helps keep your backpack more organised.
• Suncream – Life Jacket SPF 30 Sun Gel
• Insect repellent
• Lip balm
• Repair kit - Needle, thread, Tenacious Tape, duct tape, electrical tape, mini super glue
• Head net – Sea to Summit Ultra-Fine Mesh Head Net (23g) – if you are anywhere with midges or black flies this is essential. Was a life saver when cycling around the UK and running across Iceland - Cotswold Outdoor advertsiment spot 2023
